Sands, 24, joined the Bundesliga's St. Pauli in January and appeared in seven matches before sustaining a season-ending leg injury.
A homegrown player for NYCFC, Sands tallied one goal and four assists in 120 MLS matches (116 starts) from 2017-24.
He was named the club's defensive MVP in 2024 and helped New York City win the MLS Cup in 2021.
