Jones, 63, was admitted to a hospital in Honolulu after suffering a heart attack Wednesday night. The Monarchs are scheduled to face TCU on Thursday as part of the Diamond Head Classic, with two more games scheduled to take place after that.
He is expected to be held for observations for 48-72 hours and is "resting comfortably," per the university statement.
Kieran Donohue, an assistant coach, will serve as the interim head coach for the entire tournament.
Jones has been a major college head coach for 32 seasons, compiling 560 wins in that time. He's been the Monarchs head coach since 2013, securing a 203-131 record over 10-plus seasons with one NCAA tournament appearance.
Longtime college basketball observers might remember Jones' tenure at Virginia from 1990-98, which resulted in five NCAA appearances over eight seasons. He also coached at American from 2000-2013, winning four conference titles and receiving two NCAA tourney berths.
