The Beavers (7-6) ended a 15-game losing streak against the Sun Devils (9-4) at Tempe dating to 2007.
Oregon State rallied from an 11-point deficit with 8:08 remaining.
The Beavers went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 68-66 with 4:31 left.
Jorge Diaz-Graham had six points in the run, including a 3-pointer and three free throws.
Isaiah Sy hit a 3-pointer to give Oregon State a 76-75 lead with 1:11 left, its first lead since late in the first half.
After Arizona State's Maurice Odum missed a 3-pointer, Lake failed to make a shot from beyond the arc.
Diaz-Graham, who finished with nine points and nine rebounds, got the offensive rebound and passed to Lake, who turned the ball over.
He stole the ball back from Massamba Diop and was fouled with six seconds left.
Lake made both free throws to put Oregon State ahead 78-75.
Odum turned the ball over with two seconds left, and Dez White, who stole the ball, dribbled until time expired.
Odum led Arizona State with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Diop finished with 16 points and Santiago Trouet added 13.
The Sun Devils erased a 10-point first half deficit and led 40-38 at halftime behind eight points apiece from Trouet, Odum and Diop.
That trio scored Arizona State's first 13 points in the second half, when the Sun Devils built a 53-44 lead with 15:57 left.
Odum's 17 points came after he scored a combined 24 in the previous three games, including a 0-of-7 performance from beyond the arc in a 90-77 loss at UCLA on Wednesday.
His shooting struggles continued against the Beavers, making 5 of 16 from the field and 1 of 8 from beyond the arc.
