Mandatory Credit: Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain, the Orioles announced Saturday.
Rutschman, who had never been on the IL in his career, was held out of the starting lineup on Saturday for the second straight game against the host New York Yankees.
Rutschman, 27, tweaked his left side in batting practice and had been nursing what was described as left abdominal tightness.
Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters that Rutschman underwent an MRI on Saturday morning.
Gary Sanchez started behind the plate and Jordan Westburg served as the designated hitter on Saturday for the Orioles.
In a corresponding move, Maverick Handley was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Handley, 27, went just 3-for-40 (.075) in 15 MLB appearances this season, his first in the majors.
Rutschman is hitting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 68 games this season.
A two-time All-Star, Rutschman is batting .257 with 60 homers and 221 RBIs in 483 career games since Baltimore selected him with the top overall pick of the 2019 MLB Draft.
