The move is retroactive to Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Orioles recalled rookie right-hander Anthony Nunez from Triple-A Norfolk. Baltimore also recalled second baseman Jeremiah Jackson from Norfolk and designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment.
Helsley, 31, felt discomfort when he warmed up during the eighth inning of the 6-1 home win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. The right-hander did not play in the game.
He also went on the IL from May 1 to June 16 because of right elbow inflammation.
Helsley is 0-4 with a 4.11 ERA and eight saves in nine opportunities in his first season with Baltimore. He has nine walks and 21 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings over 17 relief appearances. He had a 2.53 ERA in 12 appearances before his first stint on the IL, and a 7.71 ERA in five outings after his return.
For his career, Helsley is 31-22 with 113 saves, a 3.01 ERA, 141 walks and 398 strikeouts in 335 innings over 314 relief appearances for the St. Louis Cardinals (2019-25), New York Mets (2025) and Orioles. He was selected to the All-Star Game in 2022 and 2024.
Nunez, who turns 25 on July 10, is 2-2 with three saves, a 4.98 ERA, 14 walks and 38 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings over 32 relief appearances this season for the Orioles.
Jackson, 26, batted .251 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs in 66 games with Baltimore this year.
Tromp, 31, was 2-for-3 with one RBI in one game for the Orioles, who signed him as a free agent on June 10. The Atlanta Braves granted him free agency on June 6 after he batted 5-for-25 with three RBIs in 12 games this season.
