O's use 5-2 win to get historic sweep over Rays
Jun 10, 2024; St. Petersburg, Florida, USA; Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann (27) celebrates with shortstop Gunnar Henderson (2) as he runs around the bases after he hit a home run during the third inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports Ryan O'Hearn recorded three RBIs and Gunnar Henderson homered and had three runs as the Baltimore Orioles made history with a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, completing a four-game sweep in St. Petersburg, Fla.
O'Hearn and Henderson each finished with three hits while James McCann went 2-for-3 with a home run as Baltimore earned its first-ever four-game sweep of Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field.
Orioles starter Corbin Burnes (7-2) allowed two unearned runs and five hits across seven innings. He walked one and struck out six. Yennier Cano worked around a walk in the eighth before Craig Kimbrel did the same in the ninth for his 15th save.
Just three years removed from going 1-18 against the Rays in 2021, Baltimore is 6-1 against its American League East rival this year.
Alex Jackson hit a two-run shot and Yandy Diaz had two of Tampa Bay's five hits. Rays starter Ryan Pepiot (4-3) yielded four runs on nine hits over six innings. He struck out nine without issuing a walk.
Henderson put the visitors on the board by belting Pepiot's first offering of the game for a 430-foot homer. It was Henderson's 21st long ball of the season.
Baltimore second baseman Jordan Westburg was at the center of a strange second inning that saw the Rays grab a 2-1 lead.
With two outs and the bases empty, Westburg called off first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who was camped under a routine popup by Jose Caballero. Westburg then flubbed the easy catch for a fielding error.
Caballero soon collided with Westburg while stealing second base but stayed in the game. Jackson followed with his two-run blast, his first homer of the year.
McCann evened things at 2-all with a leadoff solo shot in the third. O'Hearn put the Orioles ahead for good two innings later, ripping a two-out, two-run double. He later had an RBI single in the seventh.
