Pedro Martinez Says Pitching Is All About Properly Sexing The Baseball

Our pals at Fangraphs got Pedro Martinez to sit down with them and wax on about his thoughts on pitching, and the results are fantastic. You should read the entire interview—Martinez is one of the smartest pitchers to ever play and he says a lot of wise and illuminating things—but we felt compelled to make you aware of one portion in particular, in which Martinez essentially talks about how good he was at sexing baseballs.

When asked about how important feel is to a pitcher, Martinez responded:

Pitching is feel. Your hand and the ball is a marriage that should never end. The pitcher and the ball should be married forever. Hands, fingers, the ball – they should be married forever. It's like caressing your wife. It's touching and getting that feel to know her, alone. It's the same thing with a baseball.
