Providence gets back at Seton Hall, 67-63

Davonte "Ticket" Gaines had 17 points and went 5-for-7 from 3-point range as Providence got revenge against Seton Hall with a 67-63 victory on Wednesday night in Newark, N.J.

Josh Oduro tallied 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Friars (13-6, 4-4 Big East), who lost 61-57 to Seton Hall at home on Jan. 3. Devin Carter posted 14 points, six boards and six assists, and Jayden Pierre added 11 points.

Al-Amir Dawes scored a career-high 26 points for Seton Hall (13-7, 6-3). Eighteen came in the second half, which Dawes started 7-for-7 from the floor to help give the Pirates a 10-point lead they eventually surrendered.

Dre Davis added 15 points and freshman Isaiah Coleman had 11 for the Pirates. Coleman made his first career start as Seton Hall played without star guard Kadary Richmond, who had a triple-double and played 51 minutes in Saturday's triple-overtime loss to Creighton.

Providence held Seton Hall to one made field goal in a span of more than eight minutes down the stretch. The Pirates' Dylan Addae-Wusu (0-for-13 overall) missed a 3-pointer, and the Friars made it a 64-59 lead at the foul line with 41 seconds left. Seton Hall got within two before time ran out.

Providence outshot Seton Hall 44.9 percent to 32.3 percent from the field.

Gaines knocked down three of his four first-half triples during a 13-3 run. Carter capped that stretch with a coast-to-coast layup for a 30-23 Providence lead with 2:52 to play.

But Seton Hall scored the final eight points of the period, aided by Friars coach Kim English incurring a technical foul and Dawes making both ensuing free throws. Seton Hall led 31-30 at intermission despite shooting just 27.8 percent from the field (10 of 36) and Providence making 48 percent of its attempts (12 of 25).

Dawes, who had an injury scare late in the first half, returned in the second half with a vengeance. He hit two 3-pointers and took two steals the other way as part of his 7-for-7 start. The second trey made it 51-41 Pirates with 12:07 left.

From there, the Friars scored eight of their next 13 points at the foul line to claw back. Pierre's breakaway dunk put Providence back on top at 56-55, and two more buckets inside capped an extended 19-4 Friars stretch.
