Mandatory Credit: Michael McLoone-Imagn Images Quinn Priester and four relievers combined on a one-hitter and Rhys Hoskins jump-started the offense with his first homer to pace the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
Priester (1-0), making his second start for the Brewers after being acquired from Boston this month, allowed just three walks over five hitless innings before Gleyber Torres' leadoff double in the sixth.
Jared Koenig relieved and Torres advanced to third on a fly out, but was stranded when Koenig fanned Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson. Abner Uribe got two outs in the seventh and Nick Mears and Grant Anderson each followed with a perfect inning as the Brewers snapped a three-game skid.
Tigers starter Jack Flaherty (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking two.
Hoskins opened the second inning with his first home run of the season, sending an 0-1 pitch 440 feet to left-center. Sal Frelick followed with a triple into the right-field corner and came home on Garrett Mitchell's sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The Brewers made it 3-0 in the fourth when Mitchell doubled off the wall in center with two outs and Joey Ortiz blooped an RBI single into shallow right-center.
Milwaukee added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh. Jackson Chourio reached on a one-out throwing error by third baseman Andy Ibanez. Chourio stole second, advanced on a single and came home on Williams Contreras' groundout. Hoskins added an RBI single.
The Brewers avoided their second four-game losing streak of the season. Milwaukee was the only team in the majors last season without a four-game losing streak.
