Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Sam Carrick scored with 2:12 remaining in overtime as the New York Rangers earned a 3-2 victory over the visiting New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.
The Rangers avoided their third straight loss in as many meetings this season to the Devils, who outscored them by a combined 10-1 margin last month.
After New Jersey goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped Mika Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin on breakaways earlier in overtime, the Rangers made a defensive play to set up a 2-on-1.
Reilly Smith pried the puck away from Jack Hughes and moved into New York's offensive zone. Smith made a cross-ice pass in the slot to Carrick, who lifted the puck by Markstrom from the right circle.
Carrick's winner gave the Rangers a point in three straight games (2-0-1).
Adam Fox and Panarin scored power-play goals for the Rangers, who had multiple power-play tallies for the third time this season. New York goalie Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves.
Hughes scored his fifth goal against the Rangers this season early in the second period and Jesper Bratt followed just over four minutes later as the Devils took a 2-1 lead with 11:32 left.
After officials ruled a shot by Luke Hughes did not cross the goal line with 14:10 remaining in the first period, the Rangers went ahead five seconds into their first power play when Fox's shot from the middle of the slot caromed off New Jersey defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic's stick, changed directions and sailed by Markstrom with 7:55 left.
Markstrom stopped 29 shots as the Devils fell to 1-4-1 in their past six games.
The Rangers held the lead until Hughes scored on a deflection of a Brett Pesce shot 4:03 into the second, which occurred after Ondrej Palat intercepted an errant clearing attempt by Shesterkin.
New Jersey took the lead following another giveaway as Bratt raced into the offensive zone unimpeded and lifted the puck from the left circle over Shesterkin.
Panarin tied the game 2-2 by getting to the right circle in time to bang the rebound of Zibanejad's shot over Hughes' stick and into the vacated right side of the net with 2:47 left in the second period.
