Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Tyler O'Neill on the 10-day injured list because of right knee inflammation on Wednesday, the same day he had an MRI exam that showed no structural damage, the team said.
The move is retroactive to Sunday.
In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled infielder Enmanuel Valdez from Triple-A Worcester.
O'Neill, 28, exited a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday because of soreness in the knee. He was 0-for-15 with 10 strikeouts and no walks in his last four games.
"I think we've done everything possible to keep him on the field," Boston manager Alex Cora told reporters prior to Wednesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. "He's done everything possible to stay on the field. He should be back soon."
For the season, O'Neill is batting .236 with a team-leading 11 home runs as well as 17 RBIs in 41 games. He missed six games in April due to concussion symptoms.
Valdez, 25, has played in 28 games for Boston this season, primarily at second base. He is batting .156 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 90 at-bats.
