Report: Amateur Soccer Player Kills Referee After Getting Red Card
Photo credit: Matt King/ [object Object] During a soccer match near Tulancingo, Mexico (about 120 kilometers northeast of Mexico City) between amateur sides Canarios-Rojo Gomez and Lindavista, one of the players drew a red card from referee Victor Trejo.
In response, the player head-butted the Trejo. According to a report from local newspaper , Trejo died at the scene. The report includes still photos showing what looks like a body covered by a blue tarp surrounded by yellow police tape. An ambulance eventually arrived on the scene, along with local police.
The player who threw the reportedly fatal punch was identified by Criterio Hidalgo as Ruben Rivera Vazquez.
Correction [Nov. 11]: An earlier version of this post linked to and described a video that purported to show the incident that led to Trejo’s death. That video actually depicted another violent episode between a referee and a player that occurred in Argentina in 2015. We apologize for the error.
