Mandatory Credit: Dennis Lee-Imagn Images Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson is expected to miss the rest of the season with a left shoulder injury, MLB.com reported on Thursday.
Wilson last played in the A's 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday. He sat out the next three games and was out of the starting lineup for Thursday's road series finale against the Kansas City Royals. MLB.com reported that Wilson is expected to be placed on the injured list ahead of Friday's series opener at the Houston Astros as he returns to Sacramento to be examined by a doctor.
Wilson, 24, missed a month earlier this season due to a dislocated left shoulder. He also missed a week with right thumb inflammation.
He has a .266 batting average with seven homers and 37 RBIs in 80 games this season, and his fielding percentage is a perfect 1.000 in 75 games at shortstop.
The son of former Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, Jacob Wilson debuted on July 19, 2024, just over a year after he was drafted sixth overall by the A's in 2023. He's a career .288 hitter with 20 homers and 103 RBIs in 233 career games. With eight errors in 226 career games at shortstop, his .989 fielding percentage would the best in major league history at the position if he had played 500 games to become eligible.
When Wilson is added, he'll become the 13th Athletics player on the IL. The A's entered play Thursday 8-23 since the All-Star break, sending them to the worst record in the majors (49-78).
