Report: Cardinals plan to place OF Tommy Pham on waivers

The St. Louis Cardinals are on the verge of placing veteran outfielder Tommy Pham on waivers, The Athletic reported Thursday.
Pham didn't play in Thursday's 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres.
The Cardinals aren't part of the postseason races in the National League and apparently plan to take a look at younger players down the stretch.
If Pham hooks up with a new team prior to Sept. 1, he would be eligible to participate in the playoffs if that club makes the postseason field.
Pham, 36, is batting .206 with two homers and 12 RBIs in 23 games for the Cardinals since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline.
With the White Sox, Pham hit .266 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 70 games.
Pham is in his second tour of duty with St. Louis. He was with the Cardinals from 2014-18 and smacked a career-best 23 homers in 2017.
Pham is a .258 career hitter with 137 homers, 462 RBIs and 125 steals in 1,098 career games over 11 seasons. He also has played for the Tampa Bay Rays (2018-19), San Diego Padres (2020-21), Cincinnati Reds (2022), Boston Red Sox (2022), New York Mets (2023) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2023).
