Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports Six-time All-Star guard Kyle Lowry is heading home, agreeing to a contract buyout from the Charlotte Hornets that will allow him to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, ESPN reported Saturday night.
Lowry, who turns 38 next month, will sign a $2.8 million deal for the rest of the season once he clears waivers, according to the report.
Lowry, who grew up in Philadelphia and played his high school and college ball there, will reunite with Sixers coach Nick Nurse. Nurse coached him in Toronto, where the pair helped the Raptors win the NBA title in 2019.
The Hornets acquired Lowry from the Miami Heat in the Terry Rozier trade last month, and the sides agreed Lowry wouldn't play until after this week's trade deadline. He had $10.6 million left on his $29.7 million deal for this season before the buyout.
A first-round pick by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2006 NBA Draft, Lowry averaged 8.2 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 37 games (35 starts) with the Heat this season.
In 1,115 games (866 starts) over 18 seasons with the Grizzlies (2006-09), Houston Rockets (2009-12), Raptors (2012-21) and Heat, Lowry has averaged 14.4 points, 6.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game.
