Report: John Sterling returning to call Yankees playoff games
Yankees' legendary broadcaster John Sterling. Legendary New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling is coming out of retirement to call playoff games, The Athletic reported Thursday.
The Yankees entered Thursday a half-game behind the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East and 4 1/2 games up in the AL wild-card race.
Sterling retired April 15, effectively immediately, after 5,420 regular-season Yankees games and 211 in the postseason. Since then, the Yankees have been pairing a rotating trio of play-by-play callers with longtime analyst Suzyn Waldman.
Waldman will team with Sterling throughout the postseason -- provided the Yankees seal their spot. Now 86, Sterling will work both home-and-away games, per The Athletic.
Sterling likely will call a few regular-season games in advance of the playoffs to work off any rust.
He is expected to return to retirement once the postseason concludes, and the Yankees will be left to figure out a permanent broadcast booth for the 2025 season.
