Steinbrenner Field. Mandatory Credit: Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images The New York Yankees are planning to add right-hander Carlos Carrasco to their big-league roster, YES Network reported Saturday morning.
Signed to a minor league deal in February, Carrasco was eligible to opt out and explore other opportunities before electing to remain in pinstripes with a Yankees team that is inundated with injures.
The Yankees are in need of a healthy arm with ace Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery) sidelined for the season, Luis Gil (high-grade lat strain) out for the next three-plus months and Clarke Schmidt (shoulder, back) likely starting the campaign on the injured list.
Carrasco, 38, has fared well this spring, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.69 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 16 innings.
He went 3-10 with a 5.64 ERA in 21 starts for the Cleveland Guardians last season.
Carrasco is 110-103 with a 4.14 ERA in 324 career games (277 starts) in 15 seasons, all but three of which have come in Cleveland. Carrasco went 19-20 with a 5.21 ERA in 61 starts with the New York Mets over three seasons (2021-23).
