Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Joe Alt was carted back to the locker room in the first half of Sunday's 21-18 road loss to the New York Giants and was ruled out for the remainder of the game with a lower right leg injury.

Per media reports, Alt is initially thought to have sustained a high ankle sprain. With X-rays negative, Alt will have an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury, NFL Network reported.

Alt was injured on the Chargers' second possession when Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was blocked into the Los Angeles lineman as his right leg buckled.

Alt limped off the field under his own power before a cart took him back to the locker room.

Alt, a second-year lineman out of Notre Dame, has started in all 20 games he has played in the NFL after the Chargers selected him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 draft. The 22-year-old finished seventh in AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting last season and was the highest vote getter for an interior lineman.

Los Angeles already is playing without two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Rashawn Slater, who is out for the season with a knee injury.
