Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images The Indianapolis Colts are signing veteran quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.
The move comes one day after backup quarterback Anthony Richardson (orbital fracture) was placed on injured reserve.
According to multiple reports, the Colts worked out four other quarterbacks on Tuesday: Jeff Driskel, Jaren Hall, Tanner Mordecai and Kyle Trask.
Rypien, 29, has been released by the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals over the past two months. He appeared in one game for Cincinnati -- taking three snaps on Sept. 21 against the Vikings -- before being let go on Oct. 7.
He has made four NFL starts and played in 11 games for the Denver Broncos (2020-22), Los Angeles Rams (2023) and Bengals (2025). He has thrown for 950 yards and four touchdowns while being intercepted nine times. He was with the Vikings in 2024 as a backup to Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens.
Driskel, 32, has passed for 2,394 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 25 games (12 starts) with six teams since reaching the NFL with Cincinnati in 2018.
Hall, 27, saw his only NFL game action with the Vikings in 2023. He played in three games (two starts) and passed for 168 yards and one interception.
Mordecai, 25, spent last season on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad. He was released in late August.
Trask, 27, spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being selected in the second round of the 2021 draft. He played in just seven games and completed 4 of 11 passes for 28 yards.
Richardson's injury occurred when a pole that Richardson wrapped an elastic stretch band around snapped and hit him in the face during a warmup stretch routine before Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple media reports.
Starter Daniel Jones and the Colts are on the road Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers (4-2). Rookie Riley Leonard served as the No. 2 quarterback against Arizona.
