According to reports from ESPN and The Athletic on Thursday, Bender was released from the low Class-A Fort Myers Mighty Mussels after aiding hitters for the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Sept. 6.
Bender reported informed Lakeland batters the pitches that Ross Dunn would throw, helping the Flying Tigers score four early runs en route to a 6-0 victory. The result gave Lakeland the division championship of the Florida State League West and ended Fort Myers' postseason aspirations.
Per ESPN, Bender told teammates that he wanted the season to end.
Bender, 21, was selected in the sixth round of the draft in July out of Coastal Carolina. He received a $297,500 signing bonus, which ESPN reported that he will get to keep.
In 19 games for Fort Myers, Bender hit .200 with a .273 on-base percentage, a .333 slugging percentage, two homers and eight RBIs. He started 10 games at first base and eight at catcher.
Bender starred for Coastal Carolina this year, batting .320/.422/.520 with 11 homers and 63 RBIs in 60 games.
