Rex Ryan Calls Out Browns QB Shedeur Sanders in Fiery Rant
Rex Ryan didn’t mince words when discussing Shedeur Sanders on Monday morning’s Get Up.
The Cleveland Browns are 1-3 and Sanders has yet to see the field during the regular season. Still, the cameras and microphones have followed the former Colorado superstar closely — both on the sidelines and in media availability.
Last week, Sanders told Cleveland reporters that he wants to play and feels like his development on the scout team has prepared him for real action. He even added that looking around the NFL right now, there’s a lot of bad quarterback play — and he believes he could be better.
Fast forward to Cleveland’s blowout defeat against the Detroit Lions, and Sanders was spotted on the sideline looking visibly frustrated with the headset on.
For many, it seemed like nothing more than a young quarterback showing confidence and feeling upset when his team is losing. But Rex Ryan didn’t see it that way.
“This kid talks and he runs his mouth. Like he said, ‘I can be a starting quarterback’ with his arms crossed like this. Get your ass in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows. Quit being an embarrassment that way. You’ve got the talent to be the quarterback, you should be. You should be embarrassed that you’re not the quarterback now.”
Ryan, who hasn’t coached in the NFL since 2016 after being fired by the Buffalo Bills, has spent the past several years on television. And like many former coaches, his rants often feel out of touch. This one, directed at Sanders, came across as both misinformed and dated.
But one part of Ryan’s tirade raised eyebrows:
“If I know, the whole league knows.”
What exactly did he mean by that? Was this just bluster, or did someone inside the Browns organization leak frustrations to Ryan?
Could the Browns actually be fed up with their third-string quarterback causing headlines while the team stumbles on the field? If so, they shouldn’t be. In fact, they should be thanking Sanders. The team looks so hopeless that his confidence is one of the few things giving fans hope.
This isn’t Ryan’s first public clash with a Cleveland quarterback. In 2019, Baker Mayfield openly sparred with Ryan after being called out on television.
Now Sanders finds himself in the same crosshairs.
The Browns are expected to bench veteran quarterback Joe Flacco soon in favor of rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel. That move could eventually open the door for Sanders to prove himself — and silence critics like Ryan.
For now, the cameras will stay on Sanders. Whether he gets the chance to back up his confidence on the field remains to be seen.
