Sean Elliott Is Hogging All Of San Antonio's Water
San Antonio has been dealing with a harsh Texas drought for the past two years, and the available water resources are dwindling. As a site that has dealt with pressing water bill issues in the past, we at Deadspin feel obligated to tell you that Spurs color commentator—and former player—Sean Elliott is partially to blame for an outrageous amount of water usage in 2012. On the list of the city's top 100 water users, Elliott ranks second, using 1.7 million gallons in just the last seven months.
(By comparison, Oddibe McDowell used 33,000 gallons over the last seven months for which data is available.)
Colin McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News has more details:
Elliott and his wife, Claudia Zapata, an Express-News health columnist, own a home on five acres that includes a man-made lake with catfish, according to luxury real estate magazine NHOME. Elliott also was on the big-users list in 2011.
"As people who value water conversation efforts in our community, my wife and I are absolutely mortified to be on this list," he wrote in an email. "We do abide by any and all watering restrictions and suspect a possible irrigation leak on our property that we are resolving. In any case, we obviously have to do better. Much, much better."
Bruce Bowen's 14-bathroom former home ranks third on the list, but don't blame the retired swingman—his house was foreclosed upon last year.
