Maxey led Philadelphia in scoring (25.9 points per game) and assists (6.2 per game) in the regular season and had 33 points in the 76ers' 111-104 loss at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Maxey picked up the scoring load this season with reigning MVP Joel Embiid sidelined by a left knee injury.
Embiid is back, and expects to play Monday, but didn't look to be fully healthy for stretches of Game 1.
He finished with just 11 points in the final two quarters — and shot 2-for-11 from the field in the second half. That included going 0-for-5 in the fourth, when Embiid sat out the first 3:39 and the Knicks pulled away.
Embiid finished with 29 points on 8-of-22 shooting in Game 1 and did not speak to reporters postgame. Head coach Nick Nurse said Sunday that Embiid told him he felt good.
