Spanish Coach Once Showed His Players A Porno To Pump Them Up Before A Game

Apparently Louis van Gaal isn’t the only manager who wants his players to be horny for victory. One coach who shared the Dutchman’s preference for literal hard men, Joaquín Caparrós, even went as far as incorporating porn in a pregame talk to ram his point home.

For whatever reason, Marca recently dug up an interview Anderson Conceição, currently of the Philadelphia Union and once of Spain’s Mallorca, gave to ESPN Brasil a couple months ago. In it, Conceição recalled a particularly memorable pep talk then-Mallorca boss Caparrós gave to the boys before a game in 2013:

“Our team was doing badly in the league. The coach started talking, starting with the opponent’s lineup and everything was normal. All of a sudden, he put a scene from a porno on the projector, I think it was American (laughs). From there the team watched, not understanding it at all and starting to laugh,” said the defender Anderson Conceição, who played for the Spanish team and currently plays for América-MG, to ESPN.com.br.

After 30 seconds of viewing, the coach tried to justify his use of the unusual gimmick. “He said seriously: ‘You must be as horny on the pitch as this guy here is in this movie (laughs)!’. I think he wanted to break the ice, or something. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” he guffawed.

As an arousal technique, it’s unclear whether Caparrós’s strategy worked. In the greater sense it failed, though, as Mallorca’s possibly boner-sporting players took to the pitch against Athletic Club and lost, and were then relegated at the end of the season. It’s hard to fault a guy for trying, though.
