Speed Skater Wins Gold After Everyone Else Crashes
China's Li Jianrou found the perfect place to be in today's women's 500-meter short track final: the back of the pack.
Elise Christie of Great Britain caused the chaos (nice going, Elise) by clipping Italy's Arianna Fontana. South Korea's Park Seung-hi nearly made it through unscathed, but lost her balance and slid into the boards. Li would win handily, with a six-second margin over Fontana.
It was an extra-rough skate for Park, who finished last but took bronze because Christie was disqualified. Is this the ugliest medal performance in history?
Park was fatalist about her performance. "It is such a great disappointment," she said. "But it is also part of my destiny."
