Stanford's 3-point prowess, balance too much for Portland

Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images One of six Cardinal players to score in double figures, Jeremy Dent-Smith led a barrage of first-half 3-pointers en route to a season-high 16 points as Stanford overwhelmed visiting Portland 94-72 in a nonconference game Monday night.
Benny Gealer and Oskar Giltay finished with 15 points apiece, Chisom Okpara added 14 and Ebuka Okorie and Ryan Agarwal 10 each for the Cardinal (7-1), who shot 14-for-33 on 3-pointers (42.4%) and outscored the Pilots (5-4) 42-15 from beyond the arc.
Okpara contributed a pair of 3-pointers to Stanford's total of six in the first 10 minutes of the game, during which the hosts took immediate control at 25-16.
Dent-Smith, a product of nearby Junipero Serra High School who starred at Cal State Dominguez Hills before joining the Stanford team this season as a graduate student, added a second and third 3-pointer of his own in the final 10 minutes as the Cardinal completed a 51-31 half with a total of 11 threes on 19 attempts.
Dent-Smith, whose 16 points came on just 11 shots, wound up 5-for-10 from deep. Gealer finished with three 3-pointers, while Okpara, Okorie and Agarwal had two apiece.
Giltay contributed a game-high eight rebounds and three steals to the Stanford cause. Agarwal grabbed five boards, while Okorie and Cameron Grant shared team-high assist honors with three each.
Cameron Williams had a game-high 22 points for Portland, which lost for the fourth time in six games since opening 3-0.
James O'Donnell collected a game-high nine rebounds to go with nine points for the Pilots, while Mikah Ballew, hitting three of Portland's total of five 3-pointers, chipped in with 14 points.
Down by as many as 25, the Pilots played the Cardinal on almost even terms in the second half, getting outscored just 43-41. Portland lost despite shooting 51% from the field, led by Williams, who went 9-for-12.
