Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images Mason Marchment scored the go-ahead goal just past the midpoint of the third period and the Dallas Stars went on to defeat the visiting Winnipeg Jets 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Wyatt Johnston and Roope Hintz also scored for Dallas, while Thomas Harley notched two assists. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 26 saves and also notched an assist. Dallas has won two games in a row.
Adam Lowry scored the lone goal for the Jets, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 28 shots. Winnipeg lost its third straight and fourth in its last five.
The Jets opened the scoring just 3:16 into the game when Lowry tipped a point shot past Oettinger for his sixth goal of the season. The goal came against the run of play, as Dallas had been controlling the early momentum.
Johnston tied the game at 1-1 with 2:54 left in the first period. A collision at the Jets' blue line allowed Johnston to break free on a 2-on-1 with Harley, and Johnston leisurely finished the play with a calm shot into the open net. It was his fourth of the season.
Winnipeg's struggles in the first period continued Sunday, and this game was no exception. They were outshot 12-7 by Dallas and have been outshot by a combined 61-19 in the first period over their last four games.
Both teams had scoring chances in the second period, but the game slowed down significantly in the final 7:22 due to a series of penalties that disrupted the flow of play, carrying over until near the end of the period.
Despite multiple power-play opportunities, mostly for Dallas, the game remained tied 1-1 entering the third period.
Dallas finally broke through with 7:37 remaining in the game. On a partial break, Marchment, with Josh Morrissey defending tightly, delivered a backhand shot that beat Hellebuyck to give the Stars a 2-1 lead. It was his 10th goal of the season.
Hintz put the game out of reach with eight seconds left, guiding the puck into an empty net for his 10th of the season as well.
