Stars deliver big hits as Padres take series from Cubs

Mandatory Credit: Denis Poroy-Imagn Images Manny Machado recorded a pair of two-out RBIs and Fernando Tatis Jr. also had two RBIs, lifting the host San Diego Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday afternoon.
Tatis opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third and Machado followed with one of his own later in the inning. Machado tacked on another run in the seventh with an RBI double into the left field corner before Tatis worked a 10-pitch walk with the bases loaded in the eighth.
San Diego's Nick Pivetta (3-1) picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk in six innings.
Tyler Wade reached base four times (two singles, two walks) and scored twice for the Padres, who won two of three games in the series with the Cubs to improve to 12-1 at home this season.
Pete Crow-Armstrong closed Chicago's deficit to 3-2 after going deep to lead off the eighth, marking his third homer in four games. He deposited an 0-1 sinker from Wandy Peralta over the wall in right field to mark his fifth straight game with an extra-base hit.
Peralta struck out Kyle Tucker with the potential tying run on second to end the eighth. Robert Suarez retired the side in the ninth to secure his eighth save of the season in as many chances.
Matthew Boyd (1-2) took the hard-luck loss after permitting two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Kyle Tucker's sacrifice fly opened the scoring in the top of the third before San Diego responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Elias Diaz worked a one-out walk and advanced to third on Wade's single before coming home on Tatis' infield single. After Luis Arraez lined out, Machado bounced a single between third baseman Jon Berti and shortstop Dansby Swanson to plate Wade.
The Padres threatened to add to their lead after loading the bases with two outs in the fifth, however Boyd induced Machado to ground out to end the inning.
San Diego responded by putting runners on the corners in the sixth to chase Boyd, however Daniel Palencia struck out Gavin Sheets and induced Diaz to ground out to end the inning.
