Mandatory Credit: Barry Reeger-Imagn Images The Pittsburgh Steelers won their preseason finale on Thursday but experienced a potential loss as rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon sustained a knee injury.
Harmon, the 21st overall pick in this year's draft, put pressure on Carolina Panthers quarterback Jack Plummer in the second quarter, helping force an interception. Carolina guard Brandon Walton pushed Harmon aside just as the two approached Plummer, and Harmon apparently was injured while falling.
A cart took Harmon to the Steelers' locker room, and he was ruled out for the remainder of the game. According to the Pittsburgh game broadcast, Harmon walked back out to the sideline in street clothes later in the contest.
After Pittsburgh's 19-10 win in Charlotte, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said of Harmon, "Knee sprain of some description. He's being evaluated."
Harmon, 22, is expected to be a starter this year.
Harmon spent three years at Michigan State before transferring to Oregon for his senior season in college. In 14 games for the Ducks, he had 45 tackles (11 for loss), five sacks, four passes defended, two fumbles forced and two fumble recoveries.
