Athlete Run-Ins: Rasheed In The UNC Days
As we stretch our legs this morning and get back into our athlete run-in series, we pause to prepare for tomorrow night's Illinois-North Carolina rematch of last year's national championship game, which Illini coach Bruce Weber says he knows is important because, "Nike is issuing us new uniforms."...
Athlete Run-Ins: Smokin' John Elway
We only have one athlete run-in story today, because it's the day after Thanksgiving and we're taking a half day. Wednesday's Scott Podsednik story was excellent — though it had a few people wondering if Podsednik had a legitimate, serious alcohol problem — but today's brings up something we alway...
Athlete Run-Ins: Podsednik Takes Six For The Team
Our final athlete run-in story of the day (and the week) comes to us from Jeffrey in Massachusetts. It's about everybody's favorite scrappy World Series hero Scott Podsednik....
Athlete Run-Ins: Another Duke Miracle
Today's first athlete run-in story is one we're sure most of you will enjoy. Why? Because it makes fun of a Duke guy! Everybody loves those!...
Athlete Run-Ins: Drunken Bonding With Al Leiter
In the spirit of the Michael Jordan run-in from earlier today comes a random running-into involving soon-to-be-retired Fox analyst Al Leiter, who, if you've been to On The DL recently, you know likes his booze and late nights out. It comes to us from Jacob Kirkland in Oakland. The full story:...
Athlete Run-Ins: Getting Ballsy With MJ
As we go through our athlete run-in stories, we notice a somewhat disturbing trend: The number of fans who bother athletes, taunt them into doing something stupid, and then tell the stories like they're cool. We like to make fun of athletes too — Lord knows it's not difficult — but, on the whole a...
Athlete Run-Ins: Cleaning Up Bonds' Mess
For today's final athlete run-in story, we meet former All-Star — and "RBI Baseball" all-world star — Will Clark, who has always been one of our favorites since going crazy for the Cardinals a few years ago and then flat retiring. This one's from Peter in Denver ......
Athlete Run-Ins: Fun With Mark Teixeira
One of our larger fears when we launched this whole Athlete Run-In series was that all the stories would be negative ones, in which athletes do something stupid or assholish, and we sit here and snicker and mock them and generally stay on the couch and make fun of people. Fortunately, as with the ...
Athlete Run-Ins: Matt Leinart's Surprise
These athlete stories, we have to say, they're really getting pretty fun, aren't they? After this morning's Andy Roddick story, we present a story about USC quarterback and co-ed depantser Matt Leinart ... AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE. From Los Angeles' John Bishop:...
Athlete Run-Ins: Roddick's Rabbit Phobia
After a pretty darned controversial and debated story about Tim Duncan yesterday, we've got a nice amusing, safe one today, about tennis star Andy Roddick and his unusual, somewhat inexplicable fear. This one comes from Steve in Houston:...
Athlete Run-Ins: The Angry Tim Duncan. Grrr!
In today's second installment of athlete run-in stories, we present a portrayal of Spurs all-world star Tim Duncan, from the olden days, back before he became the Mr. Nice Guy Stud that he is today. We find this story immensely fun just because it's the exact opposite of what pretty much everyone ...
Athlete Run-Ins: When Shaq Wants Your Girl
Continuing our string of great athlete run-ins — and by the way, just because the book contest is over doesn't mean we still don't want your stories; send yours to [email protected] — is this tale from "Dan from New York." It's too long to fit in one little post — it's too long for a newspaper to ...
Athlete Run-Ins: Mistaken Identity With O.J. And Nicole
Continuing our series of great athlete run-in stories, we present winner No. 2, Mahwah, N.J.'s Steve Frischer and his obviously old yet still gripping tale of running into slashing halfback O.J. Simpson and his lovely wife, Nicole Brown Simpson....
Athlete Run-Ins: Craps With Jeff Fisher
Last week, we held a contest for readers to send in their best athlete run-in stories, and, we're proud to say, we got some doozies. We'll be running a couple a day on the site over the next couple of weeks, and we suspect you will enjoy them....
