Nationals Somehow Add New Layers Of Humiliation To Loss Of Bryce Harper
The Nationals have historically acquitted themselves far better in free agency than their fellow DC professional sports teams, at least two of whom are excruciatingly awful at signing players. But in their hurry to announce their franchise-altering failure to retain Bryce Harper, they appear to have...
Really? These Fuckin' Guys?
Relief pitcher Lee Smith and right fielder/DH Harold Baines were both elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday night by the Today’s Game Era Committee. Its voters gave Smith its unanimous approval, while Baines just hit the 75 percent threshold with 12 out of 16 votes. (Lou Piniella fell just ...
Nationals Owner Mark Lerner On Bryce Harper: "I Really Don't Expect Him To Come Back"
The Bryce Harper free agency sweepstakes are underway, and the Nationals seem to already know where they stand in the race. Their offer to Harper, which was first reported last month, is somewhere in the range of 10 years and $300 million. That is probably less than other interested parties will pu...
New York Times Curls Up On Rob Manfred's Lap
This story, co-bylined by current Trump-scandal reporter and former tribune of the MLB commissioner’s office Michael Schmidt for the New York Times, surely isn’t the worst thing you will read this week, but for any baseball fan who lived through MLB’s steroid hysteria, it will be jarring....
Here Is An Extremely Weird Baseball Hall Of Fame Ballot
The way baseball’s Hall of Fame and the veteran sportswriters who vote in its elections have responded to the presence of drug users on the ballot over the last several years has been terrible for the institution, turning what should be an annual celebration of the game’s great players and rich hist...
The Diamondbacks Dealt Paul Goldschmidt For Peanuts
The St. Louis Cardinals became a much more fun team yesterday, and they barely gave up anything to pull it off. On Wednesday, baseball’s most uptight franchise sent three fairly irrelevant players to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who in return gave them big-time slugging first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, ...
White Sox Attempt To Impress Bryce Harper By Introducing Him To Cleveland Indians Legend Jim Thome
The offseason recruitment of marquee free agent Bryce Harper by the handful of MLB teams that are actually trying to be good has begun in earnest, and Jeff Passan has a report detailing a few teams’ strategies for enticing the 26-year-old former MVP. It’s going to take a shitload of money to sign Ha...
Red Sox Will Visit White House
Because this is now a legitimate question after every championship, it was news Monday night when the Boston Red Sox announced they have accepted an invitation to visit President Trump at the White House. When it is and who will attend are still up in the air—J.D. Martinez must be psyched, but you c...
The Mariners Have Pulled The Plug
After a couple of trades in the past 24 hours or so, the Seattle Mariners officially suck again, and they don’t even have fond memories of recent playoff runs to keep them warm over what promises to be several years worth of rebuilding. A run of aggressive, win-now spending—or, anyway, intermittent ...
Oh Brother, Brock Holt's Kid Got Into The Snacks
This is not a drill: Red Sox infielder Brock Holt’s son has breached the pantry. Calling all units....
Report: MLB Donated To Cindy Hyde-Smith As A Favor To Mitch McConnell
MLB’s explanation for why they donated $5,000 to the runoff campaign of disgraceful shitheel Cindy Hyde-Smith was vague and lame and doesn’t at all function as any kind of credible excuse: “The contribution was made in connection with an event that MLB lobbyists were asked to attend.” Yes, that is h...
MLB Cooks Up Extremely Credible And Not At All Insulting Explanation For $5,000 Contribution To Racist Shitbag's Senate Campaign
Here is Major League Baseball’s totally credible explanation for how it wound up donating $5,000 to the runoff campaign of unhinged Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, of Mississippi, whose supporter base seems increasingly to be made up of racist maniacs:...
Here's A Blessed Video Of Johnny Cueto Riding A Prancing Pony
As rich person hobbies go, horses are one of the riskier and more complicated ones. Horses are expensive and cool, but they are also huge and don’t listen to reason and take enormous dumps. Compare that to a rich person pursuit like owning visual art or islands or a bunch of cars—all of which are al...
Elvis Andrus's Best Friend Retires
Adrian Beltre, who played for four major-league teams over 21 seasons, announced his retirement Tuesday. There are other places where you can find informed analysis of just how good he was, when he’ll get into the Hall of Fame, and where he ranks in a list of all-time third basemen. That’s all valua...
Manny Machado Had To Eat A Little Shit Over His "Johnny Hustle" Comment
Manny Machado fucked up when he admitted during the NLCS that he doesn’t hustle on every play. His fuck-up was not in not hustling, because do you know who else doesn’t run at full speed on every single play, every single sharp grounder to second, every can-of-corn pop-up to short center? Every majo...
Braves Prospect Appears To Break Foot After Hitting Walk-Off Homer In AFL Championship Game
Baseball season came to an end in Arizona on Saturday when Atlanta Braves prospect Braxton Davidson hit a walk-off homer to win MLB’s Arizona Fall League for the Peoria Javelinas over the Salt River Rafters. The homer came in the bottom of the tenth on a 2-1 count with the bases empty, and Davidson...
The Marlins Have A New Logo And New Uniforms, Again
The 25 years of the Marlins’ existence has been a demonstration of a team that doesn’t know what it is or wants to be. So it’ll try again, with its third rebrand in a quarter of a century, including new colors, a new logo, and four new uniforms....
Goddamnit, Cy Young Voter Who Snubbed Jacob deGrom Is A W-L Guy
I didn’t know a lot about San Diego Union-Tribune writer John Maffei (but not, weirdly, baseball writer) before today. I know everything about now, even from very limited data....
Jacob DeGrom Won The NL Cy Young And It Wasn't Even Close
Playing for the Mets didn’t impede Jacob deGrom’s NL Cy Young chances in the slightest. Despite only putting up a 10-9 record due to his hitters giving him some of the worst run support in the league, the Mets ace wasn’t penalized for his lack of wins, and he blew away Max Scherzer in the voting. De...
