Spongebob to co-host Nickelodeon's Super Bowl LVIII broadcast
The folks that gifted us Slimed Mike McCarthy, Patrick Star’s commentary of a Russell Wilson interception, and the Mitchell Trubisky NVP are coming back for the Super Bowl....
For one week, at least, Monday Night Football regained its crown as king of must-see NFL action
I have lived long enough to be aware that there are people who have no idea of the enormity of Monday Night Football. The Brady-Manning Bowl of 2005 was an MNF broadcast. For three and a half decades, there was no bigger regular-season NFL stage than that primetime matchup on ABC. ...
So 2 AFC North teams clubbed each other into oblivion after a short week? Shocker
The NFL is eventually going to win. People can push back on the product, and complain about Thursday Night Football and overseas football all they want, but in due time changes become normalized, and even the most inept schedule makers hit on a matchup. Enter the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Rav...
The NFL has become too big to fail
Kneeling and racism couldn’t do it. Misogyny and homophobia never stood a chance. Presidential jabs fell short. The NFL is unbreakable. ...
The NFL’s new flex rules are helpless against this season’s national TV slate
There are so many more interesting teams than the New York Jets and Giants, Denver Broncos, and Chicago Bears, but from now through Thanksgiving, NFL fans will be subjected to those franchises 13 times on national TV. It’s early, and there’s still time to course correct, yet after just two weeks, th...
Where are all the women in NFL studios?
This hasn’t been a great weekend for women in sports. Disgraced Baylor coach Art Briles somehow made his way onto the field of an Oklahoma game to celebrate a win with his son-in-law, Sooners’ offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. Lebby then had the nerve to get indignant when asked why Briles was on th...
Cris Collinsworth says NBC would broadcast ‘17 Dallas Cowboys games’ if possible
The Dallas Cowboys are the most polarizing team in the NFL and possibly North America. How else would you explain the fascination with their brand? It doesn’t matter that they haven’t even made it to the final four of the NFL postseason in nearly 30 years. NBC Sunday Night Football analyst Cris Coli...
NFL players should have a say in the new Thursday night flex games
Earlier this week, NFL owners voted to pass the approval of flexing for Thursday Night Football games — given that Thursday hasn’t produced the sexiest of slates to quench the appetites of starving fans. With the decision, fans will get a better game to watch and Amazon Prime gets a product to entic...
The NFL’s latest display of unapologetic capitalism is inspiring
Welcome to Deadspin’s The Sports Nihilist, where all is for naught and we are but accidental jolts of electrified meat stuck to the surface of a rock in an indifferent universe. Fuck you....
Don’t watch NFL playoff games exclusively broadcast on streaming services if you don’t want them there
The NFL has sold the rights to a playoff game to Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBC. ...
The NBA Playoffs have earlier start times from here on out — God is good
In 2015, I was in Los Angeles for the annual Online News Association Conference. It meant that as a Michigan native, I was up at 9:00 am PST to watch the Wolverines obliterate BYU 31-0 in a college football game that had a noon kickoff on East Coast time. That was also the day that I understood the ...
The Detroit Lions having almost as many primetime games as the Philadelphia Eagles is crazy
Sometimes, things are so insanely true that they seem false....
New York and California Attorneys General are investigating the NFL, but it won’t change anything
On Thursday morning, the Associated Press reported that New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Attorney General Rob Bonta have issued subpoenas to NFL executives in both states, as the pair are investigating allegations of hostile workplace discrimination at the NFL for racial and se...
The expanded college football playoff schedule is going to test a lot of livers, waistbands, and relationships
Anyone who’s ever been to Las Vegas will tell you two nights is the perfect length for a trip, and proceed with caution after the 48-hour mark, or you’ll risk going full James Harden and slapping your buddy outside the club. Three days on the strip is excessive even for the most degenerate of addict...
The NBA playoff ratings have been FANtastic
Well, Phil Jackson, it turns out that the NBA has not woked itself out of the American television landscape. Some news that you won’t find on the disingenuous provocateur in Nashville’s timeline is that the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs was a smash hit. ...
East Coast folks, get over yourselves if you can’t stay awake for a late playoff game
I’m well aware that the most visible of the loud sports fans reside between Boston and Washington. In that nearly 450-mile stretch of I-95, there are more than 16 million television households along with ESPN’s two main studios. Of course that will inevitably lead to East Coast griping about sports ...
The NBA has a ratings problem — Exhibit A: The All-Star Game
There was a time during the midst of 2020 in which Adam Silver and the NBA owned the world. The combination of an amazing All-Star Game in Chicago with a new dramatic ending, the sad and tragic death of Kobe Bryant, and the league’s decision to shut things down — becoming the first warning that this...
The NBA is dominating the news cycle during Super Bowl Week
The NFL has hit an unexpected obstacle in its quest to make as much money as humanly — not humanely — possible. Since the league adopted a 17-game schedule and sports returned to non-COVID-altered schedules, the NBA trade deadline has fallen during the week of the Super Bowl. ...
Dallas won't be hosting a Super Bowl any time soon
Jerry Jones championed the construction of Jerry World — AT&T Stadium — to host major sporting events far and wide, not simply for eight or nine Dallas Cowboys home games per year. His building hosted a Super Bowl in 2011 but weather problems in the Metroplex made that one a miserable experience. No...
Slow start or bad investment? NFL’s TNF ratings drop after move to Amazon
Is it at all surprising that a more difficult entry point for Thursday Night Football games led to a drop in ratings? With the news that Amazon had to compensate advertisers because it didn’t meet the expected viewership numbers, it might be time to ask: How suitable is the streaming model for live ...
