Home Run Derby Page 3 - Sports News, Headlines & Highlights
Even in defeat, Shohei stole the show
DENVER — Not many can get bounced in the first round of an event many thought they would win easily, yet still live up to the hype....
If only this could be Stephen A. Smith’s last take
When Stephen A. Smith opens his mouth, it’s typically bullshit. Generally speaking, when it comes to an opinion of his having anything to do with sports or adjacent to sports, I completely ignore him and accept him for what he is — someone who delivers hot takes and yells loudly because it gets view...
Rays Manager Reminds Yankees He has Guys Who Throw Hard, Too
A shortened baseball season isn’t weird enough to keep some traditions from continuing. The Pirates suck, the Dodgers are Skynet, and Aroldis Chapman is a cowardly asshat. Tonight he thought it’d be fun to fire a 101 MPH fastball directly at Michael Brosseau’s head, which came a millimeter or two fr...
Vlad Jr. Versus Joc Pederson Was The Coolest
The second round of the 2019 MLB Home Run Derby was, dare I say, the very coolest sequence in the history of the event. Pete Alonso beating Ronald Acuña Jr. on his final swing was very cool, but the real show was the insane dong-off between Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays and Joc Pederson of ...
Vlad Jr. Set A Home Run Derby Record In The First Round Of His First Appearance
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made quite the impression in the first round of the 2019 Home Run Derby Monday night. The record for dingers in a round was 28; Yung Vlad, in the first round of his first appearance in the derby, as a 20-year-old rookie, socked 29. It was very, very fun....
Here's Vlad Guerrero Jr. Practicing For The Home Run Derby, Because What Else Could You Possibly Need?
Baseball got it absolutely right when it made sure Toronto’s rookie slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would be swinging his bat in next week’s Home Run Derby, even if his debut season hasn’t quite produced the eye-popping numbers everyone expected. Baby Vlad’s eight homers in 231 plate appearances may n...
It Is Time Now To Demand That MLB Invite Shohei Ohtani To The Home Run Derby
Shohei Ohtani smoked another big home run Thursday, a sizzling shot to straightaway center against the puny Oakland Athletics. It was his 10th dinger of the season, and his seventh in the month of June, a period during which he’s also hit for the cycle and driven his slugging percentage up from .345...
Watch This Weird Old Japanese Home Run Derby Featuring Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, And Bernie Williams
MLB’s single-elimination bracket format has revitalized the Home Run Derby—last night ruled—but can we do even better? As with game shows, the Japanese remain light years ahead of us in Home Run Derby technology....
Bryce Harper Wins Extremely Kick-Ass Home Run Derby
A Home Run Derby field that was light on star wattage wound up producing a tremendous contest, with a climactic finish featuring exactly the outcome Major League Baseball would’ve scripted if they’d had the chance: Bryce Harper surging dramatically in the final round to win it with a majestic dinger...
The Story Of Shohei Ohtani's Legendary BP Sessions, From Those Who Witnessed Them
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Three-time World Series champion and Angels hitting coach Eric Hinske burst into the clubhouse like a man possessed. Inside, the Angels relievers and a few other players, including Mike Trout, were decompressing before their May 8 game at the Rockies’ notoriously hitter-friendly ba...
Put Ichiro In The Home Run Derby!
Here are two facts. 1) MLB may struggle getting marquee players in the Home Run Derby this year, with many of the best sluggers and biggest names reportedly not interested....
Shohei Ohtani, Please Do The Damn Home Run Derby!
Shohei Ohtani doesn’t think he’s ready for the home run derby. “I don’t think I’m at that level yet,” he told reporters yesterday....
It's Too Bad Giancarlo Stanton Got Tired
Giancarlo Stanton took his timeout early on during last night’s Home Run Derby. He got off to a rough start, slapping a handful ground balls and liners rather than monster dingers, and he was clearly frustrated by the time he’d already eaten up....
This Home Run Derby Was Just Fun As Hell
This is the third year that the Home Run Derby has been structured as a race down against the clock rather than a trek up to a swing count, and this derby only emphasized what the last two established—this is so, so, so much better than what we had before. ...
Logan Morrison Thinks He Should Be In The Home Run Derby Instead Of Gary Sanchez
Hey, we’ve got some Home Run Derby beef! It’s thin and dry as far as beef goes, but these are the famine times. I will happily accept any and all life-sustaining beef to get us to and through next week’s sportless days, this long, sparse summer, and, of course, the inevitable heat death of the unive...
Giancarlo Stanton Stroked Some Mighty Dongs
Giancarlo Stanton, the finest masher of taters in baseball, won the home run derby last night with a record 61 total home runs. He hit 18 of the 19 longest homers of the evening, and his 61 dingers traveled a total of 5.1 miles....
Barry Bonds Says Ichiro Could Win The Home Run Derby If He Wanted To
Here’s a Barry Bonds interview from a few weeks ago that aligns eerily well with the baseball sensibilities of a few Deadspin staffers. There have been tales of Ichiro’s monster batting practice dingers for a few years, and Bonds here confirms that Ichiro can still slap ‘em all around the yard....
