For someone who hates CM Punk, MJF sure knows the playbook
It doesn’t matter if you think it’s a work, or a shoot, or some combination of those words that tend to send wrestling fans into hysterics. What matters is MJF and AEW are the talk of the wrestling world. The business is about buzz, and well, a mile long swarm of bees wouldn’t produce this kind....
WrestleMania Night 1 Preview
Whatever it is, it’s upon us. WWE’s, and the industry’s, biggest week and show happens in Dallas. WrestleMania 38 is just about the best representation of what “New York” is these days: scrambled, lazy, nonsensical, yet intriguing, loud, brash, and when they actually bother to try, containing some o...
Jorge Masvidal hit with felony charges for punching Colby Covington in face at restaurant
Update (3/24): Jorge Masvidal was arrested Wednesday night and charged with aggravated battery and criminal mischief, both felonies, for (allegedly) slugging Colby Covington twice in the face. If this truly is a pro wrestling-style work, as we hypothesize below, the level of commitment is impressive...
Stone Cold Steve Austin to return for WrestleMania
The Texas Rattlesnake is likely lacing his boots up one more time. For the first time in 19 years, Stone Cold Steve Austin will hear glass shatter, walk out onto the entrance way to an ovation that would make Robert Plant jealous, and get his shtick to reverberate through a crowd like it’s 1998 for ...
Cody Rhodes is nuts
Cody and Brandi Rhodes must be insane, right? The couple integral to the founding of All Elite Wrestling, with a strong family heritage inside the squared circle, has left the upstart promotion they helped lay brick and tile for and could head back to their former employer, World Wrestling Entertain...
WWE is as stale as it’s ever been, but I’m watching Royal Rumble anyway
It’s a good opportunity for the industry giant to bring back lapsed fans....
IDIOT OF THE YEAR #2: Aaron Rodgers, ‘immunized’ from absolutely nothing
Welcome to Deadspin’s IDIOT OF THE YEAR festivities! Nos. 50 through 11 are available for your enjoyment here. And our top 10 thus far:...
Some great wrestling matches from the year that was
That time again. This year’s list feels a little more genuine, as wrestling (outside of Japan at least) was able to get out of the TV-studio era and back in front of the crowds it so desperately needs. Whether that was or is a really good idea at the moment, we’ll save for another time. Trying to ju...
WWE and pro wrestling have always needed a union, but will it ever happen?
Talk of unionizing professional wrestling pops up at least once a year, with it usually coming on the heels of another needless round of WWE releases due to “budget cuts” like my colleague Sam Fels wrote about regarding their most recent cuts last week....
It’s G1 Climax time, baby! (Oh, were you not hip to that?)
Say you’re one of these people. You run with the popular crowd. The shiny crowd. But you’ve never felt like you quite fit in there. As you walk to yet another lounge or patio that you don’t really want to go to, filled with people you can easily come to revile, you stop in front of some dive bar or ...
Becky Lynch’s heel turn proves that WWE doesn’t know what makes its characters successful
It’s clear, no matter what they say, that AEW has WWE scrambling, if only a bit. While they would never admit it, and WWE is in no danger of losing its massive TV deals or its place in wider culture, you can tell by their need to shake things up that they feel something is pressuring them. Even toda...
This weekend told you everything you needed to know about what WWE and AEW are
The idea WWE higher-ups have been pushing that they don’t pay attention to AEW seems as flimsy as ever now....
Just when I think I'm out, WWE's big events pull me back in
SummerSlam is Saturday night, the second-biggest night in pro wrestling behind WrestleMania, and as a casual fan of the grapples, I’ll be tuning in as usual....
We are about to enter the end of the beginning in wrestling
Wrestling has been here before. Everything is cyclical in the business — everyone comes back, stories pop up again and reference what came before, it’s a never-ending soap opera. So the idea of being on the precipice of something at least resembling a sea change in the world of big-time professional...
WWE’s release of Bray Wyatt may be its most confusing yet
News of WWE releasing a hyper-talented performer who had been underused, or misused altogether, has become so commonplace in recent times that it’s no longer surprising. Just in the past two months we’ve seen Aleister Black (now Malakai Black), Ruby Riott, Braun Strowman, Mickie James, Andrade, and ...
I thought having a crowd would make Monday Night Raw try harder. That’s my bad
Monday Night Raw was last in the pool, as it were. AEW Dynamite has run two shows in front of live crowds, and really had been operating in front of a crowd since they started letting fans fill the seats at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Fla. WWE returned to its normal arena show last Friday on Smac...
NWO at 25 gives us cause to remember other great heel trios of sports
Twenty-five years ago today, the New World Order was formed at WCW’s Bash at the Beach....
25 years ago today, wrestling changed forever

The pandemic era has ended for AEW and WWE. Now what?
You wouldn’t think a video package simply about a wrestling company being stuck in one location for 15 months can bring a tear to the eye, but I suppose that’s a testament to the production team at AEW:...
