Montreal Canadiens Page 4 - Sports News, Headlines & Highlights
The Canadiens might finally be relevant again
The Montreal Canadiens are the most important team in the NHL. If you don’t believe it, just ask them or any one of their fans. When scrolling through your NHL.TV or Center Ice package, you have to make sure to add 12 minutes to any scheduled start time for games in Montreal, thanks to whatever preg...
Do You Mind If We Dance With Your Dates? - NHL First Round Preview: Eastern Conference
In a bit of true hockey hilarity, the actual NHL bubble-ized playoffs will begin without either of the “hosts” on Tuesday. Both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers scheduled a date for their respective faces with the pavement, and hence will have to watch these modified playoffs take place i...
Ain’t a Sheet of Ice North of Fargo I Ain’t Played: NHL’s Return Preview – Eastern Conference
The winter sports and their summer bubbles return to us this weekend, because we’re descending into the Upside-Down. The NHL has decamped to Toronto and Edmonton, with a modified playoff system kicking straight off on Saturday. It’s a bit run-before-you-can-walk, with each team only getting one pres...
Montreal Offer-Sheeted Sebastian Aho, But Don Waddell Is Getting Off Those Jokes
An unexpected delight on the opening of NHL free agency: The Montreal Canadiens have signed Carolina Hurricanes restricted free agent forward Sebastian Aho to an offer sheet. It will be very interesting to see how this one goes down—while it feels unlikely that the Hurricanes won’t match, at the ver...
Antti Niemi Came Up Huge
Antti Niemi has been around a long time. Eleven NHL seasons, six different teams. And not once in all of that did the 35-year-old netminder experience what happened last night in Montreal: 20,000 people chanting his name....
Tomas Tatar Spoiled Max Pacioretty's Return To Montreal
Max Pacioretty’s first career season playing outside of Montreal isn’t exactly going how he hoped. While the former Canadiens captain appeared to be exiting a rebuilding franchise when he got traded to the Golden Knights this off-season in the final year of his contract, Vegas has endured a bumpy st...
Was Anyone Even Trying To Stop Neal Pionk On This Goal?
This goal looks straight out of a movie. In a 4-on-4 with under three minutes to go in a tie game, a little-known defenseman—in this case New York Rangers kid Neal Pionk—takes the puck from behind his own net and just ... continues with it until he scores the game-winner. It shouldn’t be possible in...
Jesperi Kotkaniemi Is A Good Tongue Twister And A Better Rookie
I always get stuck on the “t.” It’d be a hell of a lot easier to say the name of Montreal Canadiens rookie center Jesperi Kotkaniemi (Cot-Kuh-Nee-Emmy) five times fast if it weren’t for that dang “t” at the end of the first syllable. But alas, this is everyone’s problem now—the 18-year-old third-ove...
Max Domi Sucker-Punched Aaron Ekblad
NHL opening night is less than two weeks away, and it’s safe to assume the Canadiens, mired in mediocrity and dysfunction, feel like they have a lot to prove. They’re also not going to be very good at hockey, which is often a recipe for a team eager to scrap. Yes, even in preseason. ...
The Golden Knights And Canadiens Made A Fascinating Trade
The second-year Vegas Golden Knights are operating as if they’re in win-now mode, and why not? They absolutely are. Meanwhile the Montreal Canadiens are trading away their captain in the middle of the night. So that’s how things are going!...
The Islanders Got Hilariously Outshot And Still Won
The Montreal Canadiens got 56 shots on goal against goalie Thomas Greiss and the New York Islanders. On the defensive end, they only gave up 24 shots. Somehow, they still couldn’t win, as a John Tavares overtime goal and a truly dreadful performance from Carey Price handed Montreal a 5-4 loss in rid...
Shea Weber's 500th Point Was A Curveball
The Canadiens had looked like they’d gotten things figured out, winning five straight since the return of Carey Price from injury. (Funny how that works. You get the best goaltender in the world back in net, and he gives up six total goals in five games, and you win them all, and suddenly you’re thi...
There's Carey Price Injury Drama Again
Canadiens goalie Carey Price has an overall save percentage of .877 and hasn’t looked like himself all season. He hasn’t played at all since Nov. 2, when he gave up five goals against Minnesota in a 6-3 loss. The team initially ruled Price as day-to-day with a “lower body injury,” but now it’s a li...
This Is The Sort Of Weird Controversy That Always Seems To Happen In Montreal, Huh?
Alex Galchenyuk has struggled this season, scoring just two points with zero assists in 10 games as he’s been shuffled up and down the Canadiens’ lineups. The left winger was on the top line as recently as last week; he was on the fourth line in last night’s 4-0 loss to the Kings. As Galchenyuk goes...
Lightning Send Jonathan Drouin To Montreal
In the first of what I hope are many blockbuster trades over the next couple of days, the Tampa Bay Lightning are sending forward Jonathan Drouin and a conditional sixth-round 2018 draft pick to the Montreal Canadiens for defense prospect Mikhail Sergachev and a conditional 2018 second-round pick. W...
Alexander Radulov Is Older, Wiser, And As Good As Ever
When Alexander Radulov got going, so did the Canadiens. Montreal’s 2-1 series lead over the Rangers has been driven by the 30-year-old winger’s five points in the last two games, including this absurd one-handed beauty to seal Game 3:...
Marc Bergevin Is A Master Of Disguise
Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin pulled off a gag with a potted plant at Monday’s session of the NHL GM meetings. He must have enjoyed that brief moment of time in which he didn’t have to field any questions about P.K. Subban....
Montreal Still Loves P.K. Subban And The Feeling Is Apparently Mutual
Before P.K. Subban’s first game back in Montreal after the Canadiens traded him to the Nashville Predators last year, the Habs paid tribute to their former defenseman....
What In The Damn Heck, Canadiens Fire Michel Therrien And Hire Claude Julien
On the one hand this was so painfully obvious, and on the other hand, holy shit. The first-place Montreal Canadiens have fired head coach Michel Therrien amid a skid, and hired former Bruins coach Claude Julien, who was out of work for seven days, which was seven days too long....
Shea Weber Scores In Return To Nashville
It still feels strange to see Shea Weber in a Canadiens uniforms—he might’ve been the only player in franchise history to look right in Predators yellow—but at least the building and the crowd and the cheers were familiar. After 11 seasons there, Weber played his first game back in Nashville since a...
