Familia latest Phillies’ free agent folly
The Phillies had a 4.60 bullpen ERA last season, sixth-worst in the major leagues. Philadelphia relievers’ 2.36 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranked 19th in the majors in 2021. And the Phillies’ bullpen corps served up 89 homers last year, tied for seventh-most in baseball....
Rays playing 5D chess up in here
Analytics have taken over the world of baseball. Depending on who you ask, you’ll get one of three responses:...
MVP debates make my ass weary
I’ve come to the conclusion that a big part of being a member of the baseball media is just justifying your existence. Which is why they spend most of the time turning stuff into a debate that isn’t really a debate. Nothing is worse than individual awards, where distilling what “valuable” means has ...
The Mets are walking into schedule hell at the worst possible time
The National League East race is tighter than a triple-knotted shoelace. The Phillies, Braves, and Mets are all in contention, with the first two currently tied for the division lead. The Mets are just half a game back and with less than 50 games remaining on each team’s schedule, every game matters...
Let’s not give Bryce Harper the NL MVP just yet
At the All-Star break, the Philadelphia Phillies were a .500 team and weren’t being taken very seriously as threats to take the NL East crown from the Mets. Despite throwing everything and the kitchen sink at All-Stars Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto in 2019, the Phillies have not reached the playoff...
Mauricio Llovera makes baseball history for wrong reasons
The Phillies are now atop the National League East by a game and a half over the Mets, whom they’ll send back to New York as a second-place team after Sunday’s series finale. Philadelphia’s 5-3 win on Saturday ensured that, after the Mets had held the lead since May....
Rick Wise had the greatest game in baseball history 50 years ago today
Fifty years ago today, Rick Wise performed arguably the most impressive single-game performance in baseball history, throwing a no-hitter while hitting two home runs. The feat has never been duplicated, and is in no danger of being matched unless Shohei Ohtani goes off in a National League park....
Joe Girardi and his Little League gaffe
Joe Girardi will probably have to double, triple, maybe even quadruple check his lineup cards from here on out....
Man lived in The Vet, somehow didn’t die of leprosy, was maybe good luck charm for Phillies and Eagles
Tom Garvey’s story, captured in his autobiography that has made the headlines in the past couple days, should make for some wild, inconceivable reading. Because no one much wanted to even attend games at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium, and that was only a stay of a matter of hours. An afternoon or...
Phillies forced to bring back J.T. Realmuto because they made a decade’s worth of mistakes
The Phillies acted as if the franchise — which has lost more games than any professional team in the world of sports since its inception — didn’t have to bring back J.T. Realmuto. However, the 138-year old organization with just two World Series championships to its credit, had no choice. After trad...
Deadspin Fixes The Phillies: A blueprint Dave Dombrowski will never follow
In some ways, anything like this is folly when a team has already hired Dave Dombrowski as President of Baseball. The Phillies clearly aren’t going to wait around for Theo Epstein to finish his year with a Eurorail pass as he takes up poetry or dyes his hair purple or whatever means of self-discover...
I can’t wait for Josh McDaniels to coach the Patriots
Most of the season, the focus has been on Bill Belichick and Tom Brady recovering from their breakup in different places. Brady moved away, tried to start his whole life over (while still keeping his 6-foot-5 tight-end Teddy Bear for security), make a clean break, that whole thing. Bill is still try...
With Phillies on verge of hiring Dave Dombrowski as president, MLB recycles its old trash better than anyone
Dave Dombrowski is what is still wrong with Major League Baseball....
The Hall of Fame missed its chance to honor Dick Allen, who died today at 78
Editor’s note: This story was originally published about an hour before we learned that Dick Allen had died at age 78 at his home in Wampum, Pa. Changes have been made throughout to reflect that....
The Phillies should have taken the left at Albuquerque
The selling point of a major overhaul/rebuild in baseball, at least the way you bill it to fans, is that for a few years of abject play and unadorned summers you will be rewarded with years and years of contention and a spin at the playoff wheel that might land on “World Series Champion” every seaso...
The Gross Racism that Cheated the Legacy of Dick Allen
Dick Allen was a seven-time All-Star, the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year, and the 1972 American League MVP. He won two home run titles, led his league in on-base percentage twice and OPS four times....
If Didi Can Hit a Home Run Off Max Scherzer With a Mask On, You Can Wear One, Too
The United States is currently the dumbest country in the world....
2020 NL East Preview
Atlanta won its second straight National League East title, but continued a run of playoff futility that dates back almost two decades. Since sweeping the Astros in the 2001 division series, Atlanta has been to that best-of-5 round eight times, and lost all eight times — plus a loss in the 2012 wild...
Coronavirus is Telling Sports World to Shut It Down. Update: MLB Closes Down Facilities

Curt Schilling Delusional Enough To Think He Could Be A Baseball Manager, According To His "Friends"
This little Bob Nightengale scoop starts on shaky ground by assuming there are people in existence who can tolerate Curt Schilling enough to be considered his friends, but it has a great punchline:...
