NFL Safeties are getting the short end of stick this offseason
It’s cap casualty season. The new league year begins on March 13, and every team in the league has to be under the hard salary cap by 4 p.m. EST on that date. Teams across the league are bleeding talent to reach the $255.4 million number....
The NFL’s franchise tag is un-American
What happens every time an NFL quarterback resets the QB market? A relatively crap quarterback gets overpaid. The reason Daniel Jones netted a four-year $160 million deal after one good season, instead of getting franchise tagged like he should’ve been, is Joe Burrow got enough money that, by compar...
When NFL teams say they have salary cap problems, don't believe them
It’s that time of year in the NFL when you’ll hear the term ‘salary cap’ about 100 times per day. Former Super Bowl-winning offensive lineman Mark Schlereth recently spilled the beans on the cap being fake and how the league/teams use fear tactics to make fans think it’s more significant than it is ...
Despite the NFL salary cap rising, these players may be cut
The NFL officially set its salary cap at a record high of $255.4 million for the 2024 season. With that number comes the difficult task of cap clearing. Creating cap space is the top priority for teams until the new league year starts in a few weeks, and with it comes the loss of jobs. Here are the ...
Rick Pitino wants a player salary cap. Funny how coaches never want <i>their</i> earnings limited
The idea that you should stay out of someone else’s pocket is a pretty standard societal norm — except when it comes to college athletes. Apparently, everybody gets a say in what they deserve in the NIL era. Usually, coaches are the loudest ones, like Rick Pitino....
Here’s the worst hockey take you’ll see all day
As the NHL grapples with Salt Lake City’s agitation to crash the party through an expansion team, there are certainly many issues to consider. That is to say that there are discussions between fans and observers online and at the bar. The league itself will still only concern itself with the $1 bill...
Ain’t no love in the heart of NFL ownership for running backs
On the field, running backs have an offensive line to protect them. Off of the field, all they have is each other. The position with the shortest career span in the NFL has become the one that comes with the hardest fight to receive a contract that properly compensates their contributions. The deadl...
The NFL and NBA players associations are taking questionable leadership routes
The first collective bargaining agreement in the history of professional sports was signed by the MLB and MLBPA in 1966. At that time the executive director of the MLBPA was the late Marvin Miller, formerly a union negotiator for workers of U.S. Steel. His fierce advocacy for labor rights is largely...
NBA contenders might have to start holding onto those first- and second-round picks
The Golden State Warriors have been the model franchise for how to keep a core group together. Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green were able to stay united for a decade for a few different reasons — salary cap increase, luck, well-timed contracts — but No. 1 on that list is they spent mon...
The new NBA CBA does nothing for the entertainment value of the game
The NBA this season is arguably more competitive than it has ever been. The Western Conference is up for grabs and the Eastern Conference has three heavyweights at the top, each capable of knocking out the other with a mighty blow. While there is no single dominant roster that the rest of the league...
The NBA’s new CBA is almost here, bells and whistles included
The NBA and NBPA have all but finalized a new CBA, and as far as CBAs go, it’s pretty interesting. From what I’ve read, it seems very reactionary and definitely will have a lasting impact on the Association, its players, and its teams. There’s a new games limit to be eligible for postseason awards, ...
Some MLB owners are ready to pick a fight with other MLB owners that they’ll take out on the players and fans
For as much worship as billionaires seem to get around here, and the runway they receive to shape our society to benefit them more and more, they are a cranky bunch. There’s always more money to be made, money they’ll never know what to do with, there’s always someone else to fuck over, and as it se...
NFL salary cap is going up, but remember who gets most of the profits in sports
For 93.75 percent of NFL teams their season is over. Those 80,000-seat stadiums will be largely empty until Taylor Swift’s tour makes its visit. The team facility, however, that’s a different story. It will be buzzing with activity between now and September, as NFL franchises look to improve....
Sports franchises approach every contract negotiation like its Black Friday
You may be looking for a new television or Macbook today and on Cyber Monday, but general managers in professional sports are looking for those types of deals 365 1/4 days a year. Money ain’t a thing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, but the other pro sports franchises in America hav...
Running Back contracts have been stuck in amber for the past decade
We used to be a country. A proper country, where the running back position was the focal point of any NFL offense. Today, they’re the coal miners of the NFL landscape. It’s no secret that as the salary cap has ballooned and the market has blessed the quarterback-receiver connection, the running back...
Lane Kiffin’s terrible NIL fix could have been enlightening if he’d completed the thought
Lane Kiffin’s mouth is moving, which history tells us, means obnoxious words are spilling out. At Monday’s SEC Media Day, the Ole Miss head coach performed a cover of the same song every obstinate coach has been playing for the past year. Kiffin was just one of the few foolish enough to pitch a terr...
Big bucks for wide receivers is bad news for several other positions
There are currently 12 wide receivers in the NFL with contracts that earn them an average annual value of $20 million or more. Nine of those contracts — Chris Godwin, DJ Moore, Cooper Kupp, Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill, Mike Williams, A.J. Brown, Terry McLaurin, and Stefon Diggs — were signed during t...
What is it, you would say, Donald Fehr does here?
You knew it was trouble as soon as the NHLPA announced it would put out the results of their investigation into the union’s handling of Kyle Beach on a Friday. It’s surprising that organizations haven’t figured out that everyone sees through a Friday newsdump. That suspicion only grew exponentially ...
For MLB players, streaming deal is rotten Apple
MLB’s new streaming deal with Apple is why the Major League Baseball Players Association needs to scrap its entire bargaining strategy and go for a salary cap....
