Edwin Díaz Will Save Every Damn Game If He Has To
After closing three games in three days, Edwin Díaz was supposed to have Sunday off. It didn’t look like the Mariners would need him anyway, as they trailed the Astros heading to the ninth. But Ryon Healy homered to tie the game, and then Mitch Haniger doubled in the go-ahead run in the 10th, and Dí...
The Mariners' First Four Batters Hit For The Cycle Off Justin Verlander In The First Inning
The Seattle Mariners rocked Justin Verlander for a home run, a triple, a double, and a single, all in the first inning of their game against the Astros on Thursday night. The reverse cycle put the Mariners up 3-0 at the end of the first inning, which accounted for exactly half of Verlander’s game. H...
The End Of Felix Hernandez
Felix Hernandez, once and not too long ago among the AL’s most feared and fearsome fireballers, is near the end of the line. It’s been a steady decline too, not a cliff, which makes it feel less like an aberration and more the irreversible march of time. His injury-plagued 2017 was his worst statist...
Félix Hernández Can't Contain His Laughter After Ugly Adrián Beltré Strikeout
King Félix has some of the nastier stuff in baseball. Tuesday night he K’d up his old nemesis Adrián Beltré on a wicked 78-mph breaking pitch, drawing a hilarious truncated swing out of Beltré, followed by a look of pure bafflement. It was more than Hernández could handle:...
The Mariners, And Their Fans, Have Had A Bad Few Weeks
What you are looking at here is a Mariners fan fucking up, just as the M’s have been doing for the past several weeks now. The team, though still 18 games above .500, has recently slipped to 2.5 games behind the A’s for the second wild card spot. This is despite the fact that, as late as June 16, th...
Mariners Demand $180 Million In Public Funds Or They Won't Sign Long-Term Lease
The Seattle Mariners have issued an ultimatum: Give them $180 million in taxpayer money for their 19-year-old stadium, or they won’t sign a long-term lease....
Report: Mariners Execs Were Promoted After Complaints About Them Groping Colleagues And Watching Porn At Work
According to a report from the Seattle Times, Mariners president Kevin Mather, former president Chuck Armstrong, and former executive vice president Bob Aylward all were accused of inappropriate workplace behavior during the 2009-10 season. The women who accused the three executives all left their j...
Seattle Mariners Celebrate Bleak, Dystopian Future With Ghastly "Turn Ahead The Clock" Night Uniforms
Saturday night the Mariners celebrated the 20th anniversary of “Turn Ahead The Clock” night in a home game against the Kansas City Royals. The original “Turn Ahead The Clock” night was most memorable for Ken Griffey Jr. wearing his hat backwards, but it was also a grim glimpse into a dismal future ...
Who Is That Mustachioed Man?
Why ... that can’t be Ichiro? The Mariners’ special assistant to the chairman is not an active player or coach or trainer, so by MLB rule, he’s not allowed in the dugout during games. The gentleman photographed above during the first inning of yesterday’s loss to the Yankees, therefore, must not be ...
Put Ichiro In The Home Run Derby!
Here are two facts. 1) MLB may struggle getting marquee players in the Home Run Derby this year, with many of the best sluggers and biggest names reportedly not interested....
Mariners Reliever Ryan Cook Yelled "Shit!" So Loudly After Giving Up A Walk-Off Homer To Giancarlo Stanton, MLB Had To Edit It Out
The Yankees capped a comeback from down 5-0 with a Giancarlo Stanton walk-off home run to beat the Mariners 7-5. It was Stanton’s first walk-off as a Yankee. Cool story. We’re not here for that. We’re here for the swear word!...
The Mariners Can't Really Be This Good, Can They?
On Monday night, the Seattle Mariners did something they’ve been doing a lot of lately—winning baseball games, baby. This particular game featured some things that most of their other recent wins have not, including 1) a good team as an opponent in the Angels and therefore 1a) two Mike Trout home ru...
Robinson Canó Suspended 80 Games After Testing Positive For Banned Drug
Mariners second baseman Robinson Canó has been suspended for 80 games after failing a drug test. Domincan journalist Héctor Gómez first reported that Canó would be suspended, with Ken Rosenthal confirming shortly afterward. According to MLB, Canó tested positive for Furosemide, a diuretic that is ba...
Ichiro Survives Retirement, Fills In As Mariners Bench Coach
Asked last spring what his retirement might someday look like, Ichiro said “I think I’ll just die.” Which made his sudden retirement, earlier this month, darkly fascinating, if not downright alarming—would Ichiro fall down dead immediately after making the announcement? Would he lay down tiredly, de...
Mariners Pitcher James Paxton No-Hits The Blue Jays
One start removed from a 16-strikeout show against the A’s, Mariners pitcher James Paxton caught everyone’s attention again, tossing a three-walk, six-strikeout no-hitter in a 5-0 win for Seattle against the Blue Jays....
Ichiro Will Retire, Or At Least Not Play Any More Baseball This Season
Ichiro, the true hit king, has played his final major-league game—probably....
James Paxton Made 16 Strikeouts Look Easy
The early part of the MLB season has seen strikeout and home run rates continue to rise, and the game is trending towards one that is positively overstuffed with Ks and dingers. A decent theory of why this is happening isn’t too hard to tease out: Batters are consciously taking big swings, which are...
Mariners Turn Triple Play After Evan Gattis Forgets How Many Outs There Are
The Mariners fortuitously escaped a jam in the fourth inning against the Astros today when Houston’s Evan Gattis made a Little League-level mistake and forgot how many outs there were, gifting Seattle a triple play....
A Bald Eagle Tried To Land On James Paxton
British Columbia native and Seattle Mariners pitcher James Paxton was standing politely at attention for the national anthem when an ostensibly trained bald eagle decided it would rather be on his shoulder than the ballpark grass. Paxton showed tremendous poise, however, by calmly accommodating the ...
True Hit King Ichiro, In A Mariners Uniform, In 2018, Robbed A Dinger At The Wall
The Mariners lost at home yesterday to the Indians. This would be a happier story if they’d won, although I feel no particular way about the Mariners. But this is Ichiro doing a cool and heroic thing on a baseball diamond in the majors in 2018—had it been part of a win, it would’ve been that much sw...
