Check it out: The reason we know what players get paid
Just before Major League Baseball’s lockout began, the Mets signed Max Scherzer to a three-year, $130 million contract, a $43.3 million annual average that set a new record and also set a talking point for the labor dispute to come....
The first surprise of the NIL era has arrived, and it’s Deion Sanders poaching No. 1 football recruit Travis Hunter
Deion Sanders has caused a shift of tectonic plates in the college football world. Since March 2020, Travis Hunter, the No. 1 overall football recruit in America, has been committed to Florida State. Hunter reiterated his commitment to the university in both September and October. The Tampa Times wr...
Sorry, Sports Illustrated, but Time got it right — 2021 is the year of Simone Biles, not Tom Brady
Time Magazine has blown out Sports Illustrated in ranking its athlete of the year by a score of 45-10. Sports Illustrated decided to go with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady as its “Sportsperson of the Year.’ It’s easy to see how they made that choice. He’s 44 years old, and still playing ...
College football teams, embrace your championship history, but don’t be like Nebraska with Scott Frost
It’s not 1971, it’s not 1983, it’s not 1995, it’s not even 2001, but Nebraska it can’t be like this. They haven’t finished a season at or above .500 since 2016. Since Scott Frost became coach in 2018, they’ve finished with a winning percentage better than .400 once. Nebraska is making some changes, ...
The Cleveland Browns have botched the Odell Beckham Jr. situation
Yesterday, I wrote that the Cleveland Browns and Odell Beckham jr. relationship can absolutely be salvaged, but Beckham’s father sharing that 11-minute video is a problem if the post is a frustrated father speaking for his son, who is also frustrated with his current situation....
Somehow the 'BuT-tHe-AmATeUR-MoDeL!' NCAA survived the beginning of NIL
We’re approaching the four-month mark since the NCAA officially approved name, image, and likeness rights for student-athletes and, somehow, the apocalypse has not come, the collegiate model has not collapsed, and Dabo Swinney is still coaching (to some extent, at least). As athletes, schools, spons...
Houston Texans owner Cal McNair is the latest disgrace in the NFL
I’m starting to sense a pattern here....
Deshaun Watson is still not on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, and looking into recent NFL history it’s beginning to make sense why
For NFL teams who wish to make a trade, the league calendar has hit the two-minute warning. The deadline is Nov. 2, and this is normally the time where the rumor mill is working non-stop. It’s no different this season, except this is one of those years where one potential trade is dwarfing all other...
Did you know, Did you know, Did you know, a Jordan Brand executive has a dark but important story to tell
Temple graduate, MBA from LaSalle, 10 years with Nike, former president of the Portland Trail Blazers, and boasting a CAA Speakers profile, this is how you would expect a Jordan Brand executive’s resume to read. That resume belongs to Larry Miller, chairman of the company’s advisory board. However, ...
To hell with ESPN for trashing Geno Smith as his teammates praise ‘phenomenal’ performance
Some people watch NFL games, and others just read about them. If you are in the latter category and visited ESPN’s website or saw its article on Twitter, your opening frame and video would be this:...
Deadspin fixes NBA free agency — Part 2: Shooting Guards
Disclaimer: If you don’t see a guy here that you think is a shooting guard, he might be a small forward. What’s the difference nowadays? Who knows? Do you know anyone that plays one of the two positions and not the other? In fantasy and in 2K, nearly every two can play the three, and vice versa, and...
A 'NATIONAL' DISASTER: How wild, reckless spending sent this country's first and last sports daily to an early grave — from someone who was there
Born on death row, The National Sports Daily perished of its own hand 30 years ago today, June 13, 1991....
Pete Alonso has no problems with sticky stuff, but big problems with MLB
Break out your tin foil hats, because we’re diving into the Major League Baseball conspiracy well. All the talk around baseball’s proverbial water cooler lately has been about pitchers using sticky substances to increase their grip on the baseball. However, according to 2019 NL Rookie of the Year, P...
Gerrit Cole gives away the game
Were you in the mood for an extremely uncomfortable two minutes of media interaction to kick off your day? I bet you were. Who wouldn’t be? This will probably look like any meeting you’ve had with upper management. Step up, Gerrit Cole, and give the people what they want!...
Ryan Lochte is on a redemption tour no one asked for, and Bob Baffert will assuredly be next
Just two months before the Tokyo Games are scheduled to begin, the White Privilege Olympics have already started, as the baton that Tim Tebow was carrying has now been passed to his caucasian brothers “in the struggle.”...
Jordan Love has become the unwanted stepchild in Green Bay
There’s nothing worse than being caught in the middle of something you didn’t have anything to do with. And most times, you don’t even know how you got there in the first place....
Mark Few and Gonzaga choked, and you shouldn’t be surprised
Gonzaga choked, and it’s Mark Few’s burden to carry....
How NOT to talk about the Deshaun Watson allegations
On Sunday, three new lawsuits were filed against Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, all three accusing Watson of sexual assault and sexual misconduct by women who worked as massage therapists for him at one time or another. That brings the grand total of lawsuits filed against Watson, alleging subst...
If white athletes took a knee after mass shootings, we’d have gun reform
The most glaring misconception about white privilege is that some white people believe it angers people of color not to have it. That’s a lie. We’re upset because we have to watch as you waste it, knowing all the good we would do with it if we had it....
