How Aly Raisman, The Steady Teammate, Won Individual Gold
On the final day of Olympic gymnastics, American Aly Raisman broke through—winning bronze on the balance beam and then gold, decisively, on the floor. Till now, Raisman had been mainly celebrated for her consistency and leadership: a steady competitor under pressure, with a record of team success an...
It Seems Everybody Loves Aly Raisman's Parents Except The Guy Who Had To Sit Behind Them
Who loves Aly Raisman's parents? Lots of you, it seems. Who doesn't? Sweater Guy who had to sit behind her dad during today's floor exercise final. Down in front! [NBC]...
Gymnastics Event Finals, Day One: Live By The Vault, Die By The Vault
Today was supposed to be the coronation of McKayla Maroney as the world's best female vaulter. She had dominated the event since making her senior debut a year ago, winning the world championship title in Tokyo. (There was even a completely unprovable, likely fan-generated rumor that the USOC was pr...
Gabby Douglas's Beam Performance Gives Us The Defining Photo Of The London Olympics
I'm just not certain how sports photography gets any better than this. Greg Bull of the Associated Press deserves every Sports Photo of the Year Award coming his way in a few months' time. Gabby Douglas gave a historic performance today in the women's gymnastics all-around, and this is a photo worth...
Women's Gymnastics: Gabby Douglas Leaves The Rest Of The World Behind
Where the Olympic men's gymnastics all-around final had been a gradual, predictable victory for favorite Kohei Uchimura, the women's final came down to the last routine and the last score. When the tabulation was done, Gabby Douglas of the United States took the title, becoming the first woman of co...
Immediately After Winning Gymnastics Gold, What Was On Jordyn Wieber's Mind? Her Tampon [UPDATE: Or Her Tape]
It's been quite a week for U.S. gymnast Jordyn Wieber. First, the favorite to win the all-around title missed qualification and had her disappointment broadcast throughout America. Then things took a positive turn last night and the U.S. women took gold for the first time since 1996....
What The Jingoists Are Saying Today: "Suck it Russia! 'If You Don't Like America, You Can Get Out!'"
I honestly don't even know what that means. Is it directed at...Russia? Is Russia currently in the United States? If so, has it expressed displeasure with being in the United States? Why is it in quotes? Is it an oft-quoted saying? Now directed at Russia? So many questions. But let's move on to wha...
The U.S. Already Had Gold Locked Up After This Disaster From Russia's Floor World Champion, So NBC Didn't Show It To You
Despite NBC's odd penchant for showing crying gymnasts, the rather amazing image you see above (taken by AP staffer Matt Dunham) didn't make it to air last night. It's the Russian team reacting to the shock of world champion Ksenia Afanasyeva inexplicably falling onto her face on the closing tumble...
Relive McKayla Maroney's Phenomenal Vault In Super-Slow Motion
While judges found room for deductions for which it seems nobody else can, McKayla Maroney's vault early in today's women's team gymnastics final was still strong enough to set an unstoppable pace that resulted in the United States taking gold. (It wasn't a surprise she nailed the vault, though, i...
U.S. Gymnastics Favorite Jordyn Wieber Outscored Nearly Everyone Else In Preliminaries. That Wasn't Enough To Qualify Her For The All-Around Final.
As expected, in the women's gymnastics preliminaries, the United States topped the field. Less expectedly, the margin was only 1.4 points....
Perverts Abound At The London Olympics
We acknowledge gymnasts' leotards leave little to the imagination, and while we've never attended a competition in person it's just assumed that, like on a nude beach, staring is the sort of thing most would consider gauche....
Happy Girl, Sad Girl: Shawn Johnson And Dominique Moceanu Tell The Two Stories People Want From Their Sport
American coverage of women's gymnastics falls squarely into one of two camps: tales of plucky, lovable teens wearing their perma-smiles to the winners' podium, or exposés of the sport's seedy underbelly, of eating disorders, abusive training methods, of cruel coaches and broken bodies. It's either N...
Former Olympic Champion Nastia Liukin Faceplants After Her Dad Fails To Spot Her Correctly
2008 Olympic women's gymnastics all-around champion and Subway sandwich spokesperson Nastia Liukin will likely take no part in this year's London Games after an embarrassing uneven bars fall she can blame as much on her coach/spotter/dad Valeri Liukin as she can her own mistake. ...
"Athletic" Shawn Johnson Retires: How Gymnastics Talks About Bodies In Code
On Sunday, former world and Olympic champion gymnast Shawn Johnson, 20, retired from gymnastics. Citing a bum knee, she withdrew from this coming weekend's national championships, the first competitive step towards the 2012 Olympic team....
U.S. Gymnastics Turns Its Back On Chellsie Memmel, Genuine Badass
At the 2006 world championships, Chellsie Memmel botched a release during her uneven-bars routine and tore her labrum. This was more or less the beginning of a prolonged shoulder nightmare that would culminate this weekend in the cold-eyed rejection of her bid to compete in the national championship...
The "Scam Cup": How A Very American TV Event Gives U.S. Gymnasts A Leg Up On The Olympic Competition
If you listen to USA Gymnastics and NBC, it's one of the most important Olympic tune-ups. If you listen to the rest of the world, it's a glorified showcase for American athletes. So maybe it's fitting that the American Cup's highest-scoring female gymnast wasn't even entered in the competition. ...
