Tailpipe: "Let's Go For The Pole Today"

We recently discovered the incredible phenomenon of NASCAR-themed romance fiction, stories filled with passion and grease and beautiful people being driven swiftly to ecstasy and Victory Lane alike. What follows is a brief selection from one such tale.

From Risky Moves, by Gina Wilkins:

"Guess we make quite a team, huh?"

She moistened her lips before saying lightly, "Yes, I guess we do."

He was blocking her way to the door, and he didn't seem to be in any hurry to move. She looked up at him with raised eyebrows, wondering if there was anything else he wanted to say.

He seemed to be looking at her mouth. "Remember that kiss for luck at Watkins? It seemed to work, since we finished third."

He'd kissed her cheek before that race, and it had been nearly an hour before her face had stopped tingling, at least in her overactive imagination. She forced a smile. "Probably just a coincidence."

His lips quirked, and now she was staring at his mouth, too. "Only one way to know for certain, don't you think?"

"Um —" What had they been talking about? Oh, yes, luck. "I thought you weren't the superstitious type."

"I could learn to be." He lowered his head and brushed his lips lightly against her cheek.

Oh, the heck with it. "That only got us third place," she said, catching hold of his shirt. "Let's go for the pole today."

He grinned his approval just before she pressed her mouth to his.

She doubted that she was the only one who was thinking about what a mistake it could be for the crew chief and the PR rep to get personally involved. But from the way his hand rested at the small of her back as he escorted her out of his motor home, she suspected she wasn't the only one wondering if it was too late to stop it now.
