Tamin Lipsey, No. 3 Iowa State too strong for Morgan State

Tamin Lipsey scored 20 points and Keshon Gilbert added 18 to help No. 3 Iowa State cruise to a 99-72 win over Morgan State on Sunday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.

Lipsey and Gilbert each made 8 of 9 shots from the floor.

Curtis Jones finished with 19 points off the bench for Iowa State (10-1), which won its seventh game in a row. Joshua Jefferson registered a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Kameron Hobbs scored 23 points on 10-for-17 shooting for Morgan State (6-9), which faced a ranked opponent for the first time this season. Amahrie Simpkins added 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Iowa State shot 61.0 percent (36 of 59) from the field and 35 percent (7 of 20) from beyond the 3-point line. Morgan State shot 46.0 percent (29 of 63) overall and 44.4 percent (4 of 9) from long distance.

The Cyclones won the rebound battle 35-28 and finished with 11 blocks, compared with one block for Morgan State. Iowa State also had a 28-18 advantage in bench points.


Morgan State never threatened in the second half. The Bears fell behind by 20 points when Dishon Jackson made a dunk for Iowa State with 17:34 remaining.

Simpkins made a jump shot to cut the Bears' deficit to 75-61 with 9:36 to play.

Jones made a jump shot and a 3-pointer on Iowa State's next two possessions, and the Cyclones maintained a healthy lead the rest of the way.

Iowa State built a 50-34 lead at the half.

The Cyclones sprinted to a 17-3 advantage in the first five minutes. The early outburst ended with nine straight points as Jones made a 3-pointer and Brandton Chatfield, Jones and Gilbert each made a layup.

Morgan State battled back to pull within 26-22 with eight minutes remaining in the half. Edwards scored on a layup to trim the Bears' deficit to four points.

Iowa State responded with an 11-0 run to grab a 37-22 lead with 5:49 left in the half. Jefferson punctuated the run with a steal and a layup.
