The Pittsburgh Pirates won the series rubber match today in St. Louis, beating the Cardinals 10-5 after nine different Pirates scored. Gerrit Cole, the young Pittsburgh righthander, gave up just two hits in six innings, while the Cardinals’ Michael Wacha took the loss, his third straight.
Pittsburgh’s John Jaso broke open a tie game in the fifth by swatting a two-run homer. Gregory Polanoco put it out of reach with a three-run jack in the seventh.
More than 42,000 fans in St. Louis turned out to watch the loss on a beautiful, 77-degree Mother’s Day.
The Cardinals are now 16-16 , and having lost a chance to make up ground on the second-place Pirates, are firmly in third place in the National League Central. Last year through 32 games the Cards were 23-9.
