The Cardinals Lost Their 38th Game
Photo: [object Object] St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny got tossed from the game Thursday as the Kansas City Royals beat St. Louis, 4-2.
Down 3-1, the Cardinals had an opportunity at an inning-ending double play when Salvador Pérez grounded out to short, but he was ruled safe at first after the Royals challenged. A steaming Matheny walked out of the dugout and was ejected by umpire Mike Everitt. (Mobile users can watch here.)
Matheny’s ejection didn’t sufficiently inspire the Redbirds. Kansas City’s relievers allowed one more run to St. Louis; Royals closer Wade Davis needed 11 pitches for his 19th save of the season.
The Cardinals are 40-38 and 15-23 at home. There’s always the next game!
