The Mets Trade Marlon Byrd Hours Before Marlon Byrd T-Shirt Night
ESPN New York's Adam Rubin is reporting that Mets outfielder Marlon Byrd has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates after the Pirates put a successful waiver claim on Byrd. That's all well and good for the Mets—Byrd is exactly the kind of player that an out-of-contention team should be looking to unload—but in true Mets fashion, the team couldn't pull off this deal without an accompanying PR gaffe.
Mets fans who bought a special "t-shirt ticket" and attend tonight's game at Citi Field will receive a free Marlon Byrd t-shirt. It's a pretty snazzy t-shirt, too:
On the grand scale of LOLMets ineptitude, this incident rates pretty low, but it's a nice reminder that the Mets will always be incapable of pulling off anything smoothly and without at least minor embarrassment. Be sure to hold onto those shirts, Mets fans. They are collector's items now, or something.
