The Newest Saga In The Sad Story Of Broke Antoine Walker Brings Us To The D-League
There was a time when Antoine Walker was every Celtics fan's second-favorite player. How our fortunes change. Six months after filing for personal bankruptcy, Walker is reportedly joining the Idaho Stampede — assuming he passes a routine background check.
ESPN reported today that Walker — who failed to walk on to good friend (ahem) Michael Jordan's Bobcats in September — will take his debt to Boise, Idaho once he passes the league's mandatory background check. Of course, Walker's financial troubles are well-known. His bankruptcy claims $12.7 million in liabilities and $4.3 million in assets, including his 2006 NBA championship ring, which he won with the Miami Heat. This month, his trial on felony bad check charges was moved to May 2011.
His last game experience was in Puerto Rico in March, where he played eight games with the Guaynabo Mets but, despite decent numbers, was quickly released. The court dates in the months since may have provided some inspiration for Walker: he's reportedly lost 18 to 25 pounds and has been working out regularly in Chicago.
Walker signed with the Celtics for $71 million in 1999. He can earn a maximum salary of $25,000 with the Stampede. May Danny Ainge take mercy on him. Sources: Antoine Walker plans to sign with D-League's Idaho Stampede [ESPN]
