The Only Other Team To Offer Spike Albrecht A Scholarship Was Appalachian State
Michigan leads Louisville 38-37 after a hugely entertaining first half, highlighted by tremendous performances from Michigan freshman Spike Albrecht and Louisville walk-on junior Luke Hancock.
Albrecht has 17 points and hasn't missed a three-point shot the entire tournament, so it's kind of amazing that the only other team to even offer him a scholarship was Appalachian State.
The only reason Michigan offered him one was because of some uncertainty whether Trey Burke's would return for another year with the team. Burke obviously stayed, and Albrecht has served as his backup, averaging 7.7 minutes a game in his freshman year.
"Coach B watched an open gym, and I was on the visit the next week," he said. "I committed right on the spot. I said: 'Hey, Coach, I don't want to be super eager, but this is where I want to go, no doubt.' "
...
After deciding to offer Albrecht, Beilein told Carroll: "I love this kid. I'm either in a lot of trouble or I'm going to be a genius."
So far, so good.
