There Were Two Buzzer-Beaters In The NHL Last Night
Ryan McDonagh's putback after a Dan Girardi prayer caromed behind the net gave the Rangers a 3-2 win in overtime. Dany Heatley's bad-angle flick off of Nikolai Khabibulin's chest at the end of regulation salvaged a point for Minnesota, and eventually a second one with a shootout win. Both goals went in with half a second left on the clock (replays would adjust each to two seconds remaining), and both goals were officially maddening for the home crowds in Calgary and Edmonton.
Sucks, Alberta. I know. Nothing is more infuriating than being on the wrong end of a last second goal. The damn team just has to keep a little puck out of a little net on a big rink for a few seconds longer, and it's over. If you could have harried the skater in the neutral zone a little more, or pinned the puck against the boards for just a few heartbeats, or just parked the bus like a motherfucker, it's over. And don't even try to think of all the time added over the previous 20 minutes, when the clock is stopped a fraction of a second after the actual whistle: it'll drive you mad.
