Jack Flaherty (1-3) gave up two runs in six innings while recording nine strikeouts for his first win as a Tiger.
Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen (5-3) was charged with three runs in 6 2/3 innings while notching 10 strikeouts. Ketel Marte extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an RBI triple.
Corbin Carroll became the first Arizona baserunner when he led off the fourth with a triple. The Diamondbacks failed to bring him home as Flaherty struck out two of the next three batters, sandwiching a groundout.
Arizona broke through in the sixth. Kevin Newman reached on an infield single, Carroll hit into a fielder's choice before Marte ripped a triple to left, knocking in Carroll. Joc Pederson brought home Carroll with a single to make it 2-0.
Detroit erupted in the seventh with six runs.
