To Get You To Come To Cooperstown, The Hall Of Fame Will Re-Honor Lou Gehrig and Rogers Hornsby
See that guy over there? That's James "Deacon" White. He played mostly third base and catcher, and had a .740 career OPS. His best years came in the Ulysses S. Grant administration. He's the only baseball player entering the Hall of Fame this year.
Despite the BBWAA electing a grand total of zero eligible players, Cooperstown still has an induction ceremony to hold in July. The Veterans Committee picked three figures, but honoring White, along with dead owner Jacob Ruppert and dead umpire Hank O'Day, isn't going to be much of a draw—who wants to schlep to Upstate New York to see the great-granddaughters of some people who died during the Great Depression? The Baseball Hall of Fame, perhaps at the urging of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, will try to spice up induction weekend with some people you might actually have heard of.
As part of the Induction Weekend ceremony...the Hall of Fame will recognize 12 individuals previously counted among its roster of members who never had a formal induction due to wartime restrictions. They are BBWAA electees Lou Gehrig (1939) and Rogers Hornsby (1942), along with the entire class of 1945 selected by the Committee on Old Timers: Roger Bresnahan, Dan Brouthers, Fred Clarke, Jimmy Collins, Ed Delahanty, Hugh Duffy, Hughie Jennings, King Kelly, Jim O'Rourke and Wilbert Robinson.
These people are also dead. Please book your Cooperstown hotel today.
